Methinks that's the only inteligent post I've ever seen you post, Dave.

There's a lot you don't know about me, Mr Waffle.

BTW, Dave., you know anything' bout newts and paludariums and stuff?

We don't have any native newts here and since we can't keep exotic herps in Australia, I don't know a thing about them.

Can ya smell the testosterone people?

Isn't much point keeping antivenom on hand anyway. 1 vial per bite and the expiry time isn't that long. It would be an expensive proposition. What should happen is that you have a chat with your local area hospital and hope that they can have enough on hand.
Besides, its nasty stuff, it either saves you or kills you outright. Not something I'd like to bet my life on.

Do we know if this man was Steve Irwin-ing this snake with a stick, or being particularly blase about the whole 'deadly snake' aspect? One would think that there is a way to feed suck a creature without being anywhere near it. It sounds to me like he had a false sense of security and just got lazy...

Calilasseia, that's the kind of rubbish that continues to spread an unnecessary fear of snakes. Most of those useless facts were probably just found on google and were written by some arm chair expert that hasn't even seen a snake in real life.

This snake reaches 17 feet.

Largest recorded size. A snake would have to be very lucky to reach that size in the wild.

When a full sized King Cobra does this, its head is level with that of a 6-foot human being.

Haha.

It is also bad tempered, aggressive, and doesn't know the meaning of the word 'fear'. But then, when you're 17 feet long and as venomous as this, you don't need to.

No snakes are naturally aggressive towards humans, defensive when approached, yes.
Every wild snake has a natural fear of large mammals that are too big to eat.
Snakes will always give you warning first. Cobra's are one of the most predictable snakes you can get, if they're in a crappy mood, they'll raise their hood. Simple.

Not only is the venom particularly toxic (and fast acting), but a big King Cobra will inject a LOT of it. And it performs something called a 'walking' bite, which means it effectively chews you when it bites, thus injecting multiple shots of the venom.

Biting is a last resort for any venomous snake. If they waste their venom biting humans for no reason, they wouldn't be able to kill their prey. They don't have an endless supply of venom.

Death from respiratory and heart failure as the essential parts of the central nervous system are shut down can occur in minutes.

No snake will kill you in minutes. If they bite you on the face or the chest, you will obviously die a lot quicker, but most bites occur on your limbs.

Should anyone be deranged enough to want to keep one, here are, believe it or not, some care notes provided on the Internet by someone who has (touch wood) kept these snakes and bred them in captivity without incident. This snake induces abject terror among people that share its natural habitat, and with good reason.

Have you ever kept venomous snakes, Calilasseia?
Just because a snake has venom, it doesn't make it any more e to biting than any other species of snake.
I'd rather keep an elapid over any python or colubrid. They're a lot more active and intelligent than any other family of snakes.
Did you ever think you're the deranged one? Spreading crap about something you haven't had actual experience with?
If you have actually kept them before and sincerely don't like them, I'll take that remark back.

Basically, if you can't afford $1000 per vial for the antivenin (and a bad bite will take as many as 30 vials to treat), don't even contemplate adding this to a herp collection.

No intelligent reptile keeper would keep antivenom. It can be a lot more dangerous than the actual venom of the snake.
Like I said in my previous post, there is never an excuse to be bitten if proper handling techniques are used.

I hate people that hate snakes for no reason.

It isn't that I can't afford the antivenom, it's the fact that I'm not stupid enough to go and play with them

Hope the guy pulls out ok, and has learned his lesson...won't catch me playing with them though

Oh, wonderful. the King Cobra, Ophiophagus hannah. One of the world's top "Don't mess with me" creatures.

This snake reaches 17 feet. Most other cobras are puny in size by comparison. When something like a Yellow Cobra (Naja nivea) rears up and expands its hood, its head is probably no more than 18 inches off the floor, and usually nearer 12. When a full sized King Cobra does this, its head is level with that of a 6-foot human being. It is also bad tempered, aggressive, and doesn't know the meaning of the word 'fear'. But then, when you're 17 feet long and as venomous as this, you don't need to.

Man critical after cobra bites the hand that feeds it
By John Leonidou

A FATHER of two was yesterday fighting for his life after being bitten by a deadly cobra in Larnaca on Monday.

Snake handler Nicos Charalambous from Moutayiakka in Limassol was bitten by a King Cobra in Larnaca while attempting to feed the deadly poisonous snake. According to police, 43-year-old Charalambous was bitten on the finger by the 1.2 metre cobra as he attempted to put food in its cage.

The man was rushed unconscious to Larnaca General Hospital, where he received a general antidote for the venom and was placed on a respirator. Specialist Doctor Margarita Kourouklaris said the bite had given Charalambous problems with his vision and he also suffered breathing difficulties. She added that the treatment was symptomatic and that the proper antidote for this kind of poison didn’t exist in Cyprus or even Greece.
Peyia reptile park owner Hans-Joerg Wiedl, better known as Snake George, told the Cyprus Mail that the bite from a King Cobra could be deadly.

“This particular snake is extremely dangerous even to humans and its poison has a nerve toxin which needs to be treated as soon as possible. Every minute is crucial after being bitten by a snake like the King Cobra and it needs to be treated almost right away. The bite of this cobra stuns the nervous system of its victim and can send a human into paralysis or a coma.”

The attack on Charalambous raises some very serious issues, according to Snake George.
“Responsibility is the key issue in this matter and although accidents do happen, this particular accident should not have happened. People or places that have dangerous snakes like these need to be fully prepared and of course fully equipped.

“I was stunned to find out what had happened to this person because they should have had the antidote for this particular snake bite with them or in a safe place nearby. These types of accidents shouldn’t happen but in the event that they do, people should know what to do, how to react and how to treat the bite as soon as possible. I wish the man all the best and hope he makes a speedy recovery.”

Cobras are not found in Cyprus and will only be found in the wild on the island if somebody released one into the wild.

“The most common snake in Cyprus is the Macrovipera Lebetina or Blunt-nosed viper. The particular kind of snake has a blood toxin poison which basically means that it is not as dangerous as the cobra and that there should be enough time to go the hospital and have the bite treated. As far as I know, the hospitals on the island all have the antidote for this kind of snake poison and the doctors know what to do if somebody gets bitten from this snake”, said Snake George.
He added: “Here at the snake park in Peyia, we inform people continuously on the dangers of snakes, not only the ones in the wild on the island but also about other types of dangerous snakes.”

Charalambous had set up a kiosk on Finikoudes in Larnaca for the Kataklysmos Public Holiday in which he planned to exhibit the various snakes he owned. The 43-year-old, who had a total of 25 snakes on show including three cobras, was charging £2.50 entrance fees for adults and £1.50 for children to walk into his kiosk and see the snakes. For £3, people could also have a picture taken with a python wrapped around their neck.
