I am starting to get foamy water when water surfaces from the filter. The bubbles floats to the edge of the tank and collects up. I was wondering what is the best way to get rid of the foamy water?

Thanks in advance

Foamy water is generally a sign of too much bacteria in the water. Either you are overfeeding, not doing enough water changes, or you have too many fish. How often do you change water, how much, and do you vacuum/stir your substrate?

I change my water every 2 weeks. I have a 40 gallong tank, and I take out about 8 gallons. I changed my water last week, and because of the foamy water I decided to change my water again today. The foam is still happening. I feed my fish little at a time. I drop in a few Tetramin Flakes and when they are done eating I drop in a few more flakes and watch them eat it all. I take out any left overs after 10 minutes.

Should I do a little bit more water change tomorrow to get rid of the bacteria?

Right now I opened the tank cover to feed the fish. The foamy water goes away after a few minutes when I do this. After the feeding I close the cover, and after half an hour to one hour the foamy water comes back.

Why is that?

How old are your filter media cartridges ?
Might be time to change your charcoal.
Also, is your filter size appropriate to the size of the tank ?

Do a nitrate test too and post the results..
Could also be excess protein in the water, but that goes back to overstocking, not enough water changes.. You're doing the water changes AND removing excess food which is good.. I'm leaning to the charcoal pack needs to be changed.

This is a new aquarium. So the cartridges and filter isn't that old. I am using a Penguin 330 in a 40 gallon. I think that is alright.

I'm actually starting to think it is my dechlor. I am using Aqua Plus, and it has ingredients to help coat scales and fins. That substance might be on the bubbles making it harder to pop.

I'll try to do a few more water changes to see what happens.

Yup, sounds like the declor.
I'm not familiar with the best type etc, I have well water.

The members have some other ways to dechlor water without all the chemicals, such as letting the water sit in bucket overnight with an airstone etc.. Someone who knows more about this should be along soon, I'll butt out now

Yeah, Aquaplus is the problem...it does the same thing to my water. Stress Coat, another dechlor, has scale protecting stuff etc but it doesn't make the water as thick. I use half Stress Coat and half Aquaplus for all of my waterchanges so it's not as foamy as it would be if I had only used Aquaplus.

Increasing surface agitation will usually help too

Hmm..glad to hear the water isn't totally bad. I should find another type of dechlor.

So far the foam is going away slowly. I am doing little water changes daily.

Thanks for everyone with the replys.

If you sit the water overnight in a bucket with the airstone it's supposed to help dissapate the chlorine by itself but I think something would still need to be added for chloramines.
