Driftwood without filtration will darken the water considerably, consider fake driftwood or some type of rock.

Are you planning for a light? If so, how strong? Because you will find that it will heat the water somewat, depending on strength.

i use 1.5-2 gallon cookie jars for my bettas. ok you might be thinking what the hell cookie jars.. but once the betta and ornaments are in, it actually looks like a fish bowl, probably even prettier.
i use about 1 inch of blue sand, 3 smooth rocks and one plastic plant for the betta to swim around and rest on.
tried real plants once but they just kept ripping it apart ] probably out of boredom or something.
ive got 6 bowls all with the same layout except different plants. at the end of each week when i do water changes i change the plants around for each bowl so the bettas have a new plant to play with and possibly a new environment sort of.

never tried lighting before, didnt know how to for bowls.
still trying to figure out how to heat the bowls, winter is coming up.. im afraid my sweeties might freeze :/
tried putting the bowls on my computer table shelf thingy (above the monitor) so when the monitor heats up it warms up the bowls too XD and it works loL
but my monitor cant be on 24/7 for all of winter :%)

heating multiple betta containers

palce all containers in tupperware container/storage bin/ect..ect... ( about (1/3 to 1/2 way up the betta bowls) with room between each container- fill CONTAINER with water- add small heater to container- and there you go

lighting- hang a light over the entire set up- or for very low light ( plants not fish) clip on book lights will work)

Java moss will do well with just the lighting from the room. My bettas leave theirs alone, except to lounge on.

Indeed...hca posted some great ideas I believe the lighting is how Falstaf is doing his nanos. The heating is just if not more important. Temp fluctuations IMO/E are often worse than simply low temps when it comes to causing nasties such as ich.

Confession time, he he , the "bowl" doesnt have a "clear" lid it has a thin stainless steal lid

one FAKE piece of D-wood in the middle
one small clump of java moss
one or two small, real or fake plant(s)

But there is the light from the roof my lights are swivelly lights so I can aim them at the fish tank so any suggestiong for VERY low light plants?

Java fern and java moss will both survive in very low light conditions.

Or buy clear acrylic from a home improvement/DIY shop and cut to fit. You may find that with the light coming @the tank from an angle that the fish my try and swim sideways .

if its a screw-on lid, you are best off knocking up your own, as a screw on lid will cut off all airflow, and thats a bit iffy, even with bettas.

Anyhow, here's my contribution to this thread.

It's not the slice of heaven that falstaf has in the aquascaping contest showcase, but it'll get the creative juices flowing. Excuse the cloudy water, gravel vaccing and rescaping on flourite has a tendency to do that.

You can take a piece of plastic canvas and cut it to fit the top of the bowl- to keep it weighed down string on some beads here and there- it will let lightand more importantly air threw to the betta bowl.

Yes, they can jump. As I found out to my sadness... I still don't know HOW he managed to jump out of a 1/2" x 1" cutout... I now cover that cutout.

Easiest thing to do if you want to keep the tank open is just drop the water level around three inches from the lip of the container. I've only had one betta who likes to jump constantly (and it wasn't even the one who managed to jump out!). He likes to splash up against the lid to his tank, for whatever reason. *rolls eyes*

hmm, I might just stick to fake plants. I might just try to aquascape my 5 gal..nothing flashy. If I have an 11 watt flourecent light abouve the tank what kind of plants could I keep in it if I had that light above my tank? (approx 15cm above the tank?)

low, medium or high? Id like to try glosso...

It depends... my guppies and danios destroyed my glosso by repeatedly pulling it up (I tried a carpet effect). I don't know if they literally pulled it up or just liked swimming through it so much that it got pulled up like that.

It depends on the light, while 15 watts over one gallon is a whopping 15 wpg... it's still ONLY 15 watts. It's kind of hard to say what will work. You can try it and see... maybe someone else has experience with it. I can say that the glosso looked like it was doing well until my silly fish destroyed it.
