Aquascaping suggestions wanted (with pics) | |
Alex Fish Addict 510 Posts: 721 Registered: 03-Oct-2004 | at the moment its got about 1/10 of all the plants i want to have in there eventually. Its a lowlight setup about 1.5wpg. The african fern on the left is going (its gone funny)and every thing else is staying. I want to plant infront of the log but i want to still be able to see it well so i need some lowlight plants (crypts) that stay almost flat on the ground. The plant behind the ceneral crypt was in a nice bunch but after my last major rescape i couldnt find the rest of it .I dont really want to plant on the log with Java fern and anuibus (spelling) (even though in aus if i did that it would be worth a hell of a lot) Will cambomba be able to live in such little light? I thought not until i saw a tank on a site that had no light and some great looking cambomba Im also looking for a dark green plant to plant behind the swords (that isnt vallis) What floating plants besides hornwort will live in my lighting? (i might use one or six but im not sure yet) How do you use anudibas?(spelling) i think i will use some because it will work with my lighting but it doesnt seem to contrast with anything (it looks like its from land :%):%)) and finally what is this plant ? willl it live in 1.5wpg? how big does it get? Most crypts would probably get too tall and hide the log. Anubias Nana Petite would be perfect (they don't have to be tied to the log). You could try some Cryptocorene Willisi they have relatively thin pointy leaves so would still leave the log visible. Cryptocorene Parva would be ideal, very small, but hard to find. Will cambomba be able to live in such little light? I thought not until i saw a tank on a site that had no light and some great looking cambomba Generally no Cambomba won't survive or will look terribly unhealthy. You could use Asian Ambulia which looks almost the same, but requires less light (this may have been what you saw in the pic). Im also looking for a dark green plant to plant behind the swords (that isnt vallis). Aponogeton Crispus. Easy, don't need much light, nice shape and will out the tank better then Vals. What floating plants besides hornwort will live in my lighting? Most, beacuse they float they're close to the light. Duckweed , Salvina but these can become a pest. Easy to control is Water Sprite. My own reccomendation would be Brazillian Pennywort. Loves to float or can be planted in substrate (where it will do it's best to try to float aagain !) very pretty, fish love it, very easy to control. How do you use anudibas?(spelling) i think i will use some because it will work with my lighting but it doesnt seem to contrast with anything (it looks like its from land ) Well that's pretty much the reason why they are such a good contrasting plant ! The dark thick leaves and shape and growth pattern makes them an ideal contrast to the lighter green and softer leaves of other aquarium plants. They show off the other plants, the other plants show them off - win-win. Personally I find they look there best when in thick groups rather then individual plants with just a few leaves. Look stunning when used in a sloping fashion or in mounds and hills. This is quite easy to do. Just tie a lot of Anubias to a rock or small piece of wood until it is covered and you've got an instant hill that you move anywhere you like. Or planted around the sides and the top of a grey rock with the front of the rock sticking out and visible is very effective and natural. Thick groups of smaller Anubias with a solitary large variety in the middle (like Coffeefolia) is very effective. To me they are the most versatile and useful plant around. To fill out the tank you can use Wisteria, Hygro Polysperma and taller cypts like Balansae. A tiger lotus would work as a centerpiece and a dash of red. There is really a lot you can do with 1.5wpg, with a bit of creativity and imagination you can have a heavily planted and attractive tank pretty easily. and finally Looks like a Melon Sword or possibly an Ozelot. 1.5 wpg is a touch and go but it might make it, but will grow slowly and not get too big. HTH. BTW, your font is incredibly difficult to read I had to really squint to make out some of it - or maybe I'm just getting old Remember that age and treachery will always triumph over youth and ability. |
