Attaching background - tips please | |
crusha Enthusiast Fish Geek Posts: 262 Kudos: 183 Votes: 102 Registered: 11-Nov-2005 | I want to attach a black background (LFS bought) to my tank. I've been reading previous threads about this and it was mentioned to use vaseline. Do you cover the whole back of the tank with vaseline or just around the edges? Does anyone have any other method that works well. Thanks for your help. Cheers - Crusha |

I used veggie oil for mine but otherwise the method is the same as is outlined as dan mentioned. If you have a squeegee around the house that works quite well, as do paint stirrers . ^_^ |

It's a slow process and it helps if someone else holds it in place at first. On my bedroom tank, I have 3 sides covered. (I have to sleep in the daytime a lot for work and didn't want the light shining in my eyes). Instead of wrapping it around the corners, I used a razor blade to carefully cut it, then taped it back down. This material is hard to bend and keep a tight fit near the corners. I've had the one in the living room taped on there for over 3 yrs. with no problems. Just use good name brand tape. 29g - 5 Head and Tail Light Tetras, 1 Black Phantom Tetra, 1 melanistius cory, 1 Featherfin Synodontis, 1 otto 29g - 14 harlequin rasboras, 5 albino corys, 3 ottos 10g - 1 glowlight tetra, 2 Black phantom tetras, 1 red betta on entertainment center |

I picked you this tank at a yard sale and the cleaning took long.. had backing and taking it off it was greasy like.. so now im sure thats what it was oil of some kind. Dont use it, we all know we dont use heavy cleaning products on tanks, but to remove the stuff was a pain I use clear tape and hockey tape worked even better. Sue |

crusha Enthusiast Fish Geek Posts: 262 Kudos: 183 Votes: 102 Registered: 11-Nov-2005 | I had a go at the oil method. It wasn't all that good. There were lots of tiny air bubbles which I just couldn't get out no matter how much I tried with a squeegy. It just didn't look very nice at all so ... I took the backing off, washed the glass, washed the backing ... pain in the butt . I just went for the scotch tape around the edges and it worked o.k. Looks a lot better than the oil. The oil might be ok for a patterned background but I was using a solid black. Thanks everyone for your input anyway. Cheers - Crusha |
