I want to attach a black background (LFS bought) to my tank. I've been reading previous threads about this and it was mentioned to use vaseline.

Do you cover the whole back of the tank with vaseline or just around the edges?

Does anyone have any other method that works well.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers - Crusha

When I did it I covered the whole back peice of glass with vaseline then I got the background stuff and stuck it onto the vaseline, and then pressed any remaining air bubbles out with a ruler.

Other than vaseline you can also use oil. I used veggie oil for mine but otherwise the method is the same as is outlined as dan mentioned.

If you have a squeegee around the house that works quite well, as do paint stirrers .

I've used clear scotch tape on all 3 of mine. It's a slow process and it helps if someone else holds it in place at first. On my bedroom tank, I have 3 sides covered. (I have to sleep in the daytime a lot for work and didn't want the light shining in my eyes). Instead of wrapping it around the corners, I used a razor blade to carefully cut it, then taped it back down. This material is hard to bend and keep a tight fit near the corners. I've had the one in the living room taped on there for over 3 yrs. with no problems. Just use good name brand tape.

All of mine (10) are attached with Scotch tape. I only tape the 4 corners.

You have all solved the mystry. I picked you this tank at a yard sale and the cleaning took long.. had backing and taking it off it was greasy like.. so now im sure thats what it was oil of some kind. Dont use it, we all know we dont use heavy cleaning products on tanks, but to remove the stuff was a pain

I use clear tape and hockey tape worked even better.

I had a go at the oil method. It wasn't all that good.

There were lots of tiny air bubbles which I just couldn't get out no matter how much I tried with a squeegy. It just didn't look very nice at all so ... I took the backing off, washed the glass, washed the backing ... pain in the butt .

I just went for the scotch tape around the edges and it worked o.k. Looks a lot better than the oil.

The oil might be ok for a patterned background but I was using a solid black.

Thanks everyone for your input anyway.

Cheers - Crusha

i used fun tack or w/e its called.
just put it on the aquarium edging and u don't have to worry about air bubbles because its not actually stuck to the glass. seems to be working great, but i guess scotch tape would work just as well.
