I was just wondering what type of background, if any, does anyone have on the back of your tank?? Right now I have one that has a photo of plants and sand with some rocks, but I have been considering putting a black background since I'm trying to have a planted tank and want the attention on the fish and the plants. So any ideas are thanked very much

Yep, black backgrounds are the way to go

Depending on the size of your tank, you should be able to just buy a black posterboard and cut it to fit. Very simple.

Black paperboard as was said, or black backgrounds from the LFS, attached to the back with vaseline makes it stay better and look better.

If you deside to stick with the planted BG use vaseiline as well, as it will make it stick out crystal clear.

Yes, you can use Black paper for the background. It's easy to assembly, as you can stick it to the back of your tank with scotch tape. That's how i've done mine. Very easy.

I have a black background on one of my tanks. Changed the other from the black to the bright (SW) blue, and have the plant background on another.

Of the three I don't like the plant one ..it's just on there to have one on....the black background is too dark for the tank and the blue is just a tad too bright. Dark blue backgrounds that start out brighter @the top and fade to a darker blue @the bottom are my favorites....I've seen them on other tanks, havent managed to find them around here :%).

I paint the backs on the outside with black latex gloss. The hospital/breeding tanks I painted in the sides too.

I have blue (bright to dark, like the one Babel described) on one tank, and the Juwel 3D black background which goes inside the tank on another, but for this one you need to empty your tank, stick it on with silicone, wait, and fill the tank again. It's nice, but to be honest it's not worth the money and the hassle. At least in my opinion.

Babelfish,

Thats what I have on my 55 Gal right now. I really like it. Due to my lighting it almost looks all navy blue.

On my 20 Gal I have lighter blue tinfoil-krinkal stuff. It is kind of nice because you can shape it to give it some depth.

Not at all! They don't know the difference one way or another - it may create some behavioral differences, but it's not bad one way or another. For example, without a background there may be more reflection in the sides of the tank, which may cause schooling fish to try to "school" with their own reflections more often.

I just got (and it turns out to be GORGEOUS) a Habi-scape terrarium background (they're safe for aquaria). 3D backgrounds are much more common in the UK than here, and they're hard to beat for just plain good looks - [link=this tank, for instance, uses the same brand of background I just bought]http://www.cichlid-forum.com/tanks/displaytank.php?style=1&tank=7167" style="COLOR: #4040FF[/link]. Much nicer than a flat background any day, and you can often hide equipment behind it.

I use a deep blue contact paper for my tanks, and a couple I use black contact paper. I think it looks much better than backgrounds and alot neater too. No getting water in between the background and glass...I hate that!
