Fire away! Im planning on keeping either mbuna, my colony of peacocks, or some other africans.. Right now its serving as a grow out tank.

I sorta wanna fill that big ugly gap mid right. Any suggestions?

Oh, I didnt fill it up to the top cause I was planning to keep some crabs or something in there..maybe some frogs? *shrugs* It matches the height of the plants this way too

Thanks!

Looks great. Mabye get some wood that curves from the top rear corners swooping into mid tank area? Though i know how hard it is to find that perfect peice of wood:%) though I have yet to keep large african cichlids,(I have some shellies). So i cant offer advice on that. Myself I'd put some SA cichlids like blue acara, convicts or fire heads. But thats just me. What ever you put in there will be very happy indeed I can give you one thing that is crabs are little buggers, I purchased 1 for my girl friend 1 1/2in dia. When we added it to the tank within 1 hour it had caught and begun to consume a 2 1/2in bolivian ram. After 3 hours it was fully gone We were too late to save the fish so we let "nature" take its course. Have fun

I can't tell whether the plants are real or fake; not that it matters; the cambs should be placed further back and the mound +the fore-wood should have attached plants that can take full advantage of the low water line (which I like). Anubias comes to mind.

i think its GREAT! Its a mix of natural landscaping and aquascaping. Looks GREAT.

I think there could be better driftwood curvature, but since that is basically impossible, what you have is AWESOME. A+

I actually really like it just the way it is!
The whole thing reminds me of places I've been diving....of course you'd have to replace the plants with giant algae growths to get a true replication .

Only thing I might change is to add a small ammount of Peace Lilly to the out of the water bits of the wood. and just let the roots grow into the water.

Thanks for all the replies!

Alice: I'm still searching for more driftwood Out of the 20 something pieces, I snagged these (for only 5 bucks a pop too!) I wanted some more "branchy" looking ones to give it more of a submesered/shoreline look. What type of crab are you referring to?

Cup: IM HORRIBLE WITH PLANTS! Please give me any advice you have on plants . All the plants are fake, since I've killed almost every "beginners" type of plant already (even java moss, java fern, water sprite) I think I might give anubias another try since I want to lower the water line more and attach some plants there like you've said.

Thanks Rasco. All the driftwood at the LFS are either really really $$ or really ugly

Babel: Where did you go diving at? Hehe I think I would kill this "peace lily" your talking about.

This was actually what got me to do this..of course I dont know what it actually looks like underwater so I had to "make it up" Its from TFH magazine, the rainbow edition.

Do you guys think I should lower the water line more, add anubias, add more plants on the mid right area, and more rocks/driftwood?

Inko I dive in some of the local quarries in the area....it looks strikingly like that ... if the rocks were about 5' across....okay your tank isn't that big ....

Peace lilly is actually very easy to maintain, it's often sold by mistake as an aquatic plant and will survive submerged for quite a few months. Often sold in the plants section of your grocery store for rather cheap . [link=Peace Lilly]http://www.yourgarden.com/qa/eng/special-peacelilly.htm" style="COLOR: #EB4288[/link]. I think it'd just fill up the space above the water and complete the impression of land and water.

If you dont mind waiting a bit for your wood, find a fallen tree preferably hard wood and check the branches for what shapes your after, and cut them away a little long so you can check and adjust it to suit the layout. Get a large container(I used a 75L plastic bin from a hardwear for $5. Fill with water and leave the wood to soak, in the most direct sunlight area of your yard, as the heat helps leach the tannins. Do water changes depending on how dark the water is, even if possible run a power head with carbon as this removes the stain a bit. It will not soak back in once it comes out. My soak lasted 2 months and the wood still leached stain for a while but 5 months on its clear as.
The crab, unsure of scientfic name, brought as a freshwater crab. It had a red shell with fairly small pincers for the size of it's body. Do you run a heater when not having luck with plants? I've recently started a plant tank. Used to be a cichlid tank at about 27c 80f, and i could not get plants to last more than 5months max. I put the cichlids in another tank and moved this one into the lounge. I had real trouble with red plants , they would turn green then die off. I was told it was a lack of light, but 2 days after i switched off the heaters the plants were turning red again. Its now at 25c 77f and running the same light. The java fern is going crazy and java moss too.

I thought you cant use any type of wood in the aquarium? Maybe I'll steal some driftwood from the local lake (theres like a jillion near me) and soak it in my small pond in the backyard

How about some firebelly newts?
And with drift wood I think you want to boil it first.
