I'm planning a 15 gallon and I really want to have some natural looking stones. My mum has a ton of fieldstone that she bought from a hardware store that has been laying outside all winter. It looks perfect for my tank, its only a inch or so thick. I scraped at the surface of a small piece and poured vinegar over it. There was no reaction. So is there anything else that might be wrong with it? If fieldstone is OK then all I have to do is rinse, scrub, and put some boiling water on it right?

It should be fine. Like you said in your post, just clean it up a bit, soak in some boiling water and you should be okay.

If it's the same stuff that my garden center calls fieldstone, it's just fine. I've got 90 lbs of it in my 125 and 50 lbs or so in a 20 long.
