Hi

Im just about to set up a new tank.. its about 211 litres. and i was just wondering if anyone has tried 'layering' their tank... maybe layering might not be the right term.. but sort of making steps up so at the front of the tank its flat then you add some glass and more gravel and make another level towards the back of the tank.. ive seen it done at aquarium shops but have never asked how its done.. i hope i explained it well enough!

WEll, mine is done with driftwood. its an angled piece that fits into the back corner and along the wall, and i just backfilled it with some extra gravel and planted in it.

You could use slate (if your tank is ok with a high pH etc) or some type of plastic or driftwood.

the possible problem is if the sand/gravel is too deep and you build up anaerobic gas pockets, so try to keep it under 2" deep if you can, or at the very least make sure you can gravel vac it regularly

If you are running a UGF you could possibly go deeper.

Thats what my tank looked like 8 months ago, you can see the two sections made with the driftwood, one at the front has crypts, at the back is stricta and java fern [/font]
