You know those "decorations" that you buy at your LFS that are painted with the worst paint in the world. They sit in your tank for a month or so and then all of the paint starts comming off. I would like to know how everyone in here deals with this problem. Do you just not buy these products or what? The reason I ask is because at my LFS they have some really nice natural looking decorations, but they are painted. They are probably around 5" long and maybe 3" tall, and they are $10. I would buy them if I knew they would last more than 2 or 3 months. Thanks to everyone who replies!!!!

I dont' buy them....but, you might try a thin coat of aquarium safe silicone to keep the paint from flaking. If it does start to flake, it's likely to help prevent it from making a mess in the tank.

I don't use painted decorations, but my brother has a few. He has had them in his tanks for almost 3 months without any problems. Maybe it's just a certain brand of decorations that have the paint flaking problems.

When I was starting out a couple years ago, I used painted objects and they worked fine, the only time they flaked was when I chipped it against something.

Its been at least 5 years since, so I'm guessing the paint has improved and will probably last longer and has higher durability.
