hello i am thinking about upgrading my 10 gallon tank to a 55 gallon and i want to put sand in it because i read that my dinosaur eels like to dig in the sand. my questions are: what kind of sand should i use, where can i get it (like home depot or some where) and how would i clean it or do i need to clean it?
thanks for any suggestions.

The sand that I get is Home Depot sand. I get the play sand, I think. It comes in 50 lb bags, and costs about $4. It looks pretty nice and natural, but you have to wash it. A lot. And once you think you've washed it enough, wash it a couple times more. Even then you'll get cloudy water for a few days. It does go away, though, and the overall effect of the sand is nice. I like it a lot better than gravel.

EDIT: What I do to wash it is put it in a clean tub/bucket. I use the garden hose and, well, wash it . Stir it up, dump the water, refill, etc.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

I'm about to experiment with this stuff called pool filter sand that is available at my swimming pool supply company. The stuff comes in brown and grey and is very cheap... like 8 dollars for 50 pounds. I'll let you know how it goes, or maybe you would like to look into it also. I think that it is crushed silica and does not cloud up as easily.

Make sure that you rinse it alot. Rinse it till the water is clear. It will take you some time, but it's better than having a clowdy tank for a week or so.

In the tank, Sand is easy to clean, just pass the siphon about 1 inch from the sand & the "Poo" will come up & leave the sand in your tank, nice & clean.
