Rob1619 Fish Addict Posts: 763 Kudos: 619 Votes: 626 Registered: 01-Sep-2004 | Hi, Can i use any kind of stones in my freshwater tank? Like stones from my garden? And what about some stones from the sea? If i clean it really good and putt the stone in boiling water and then in cold water for 2 days. Will it be safe for my tank or should i buy rocks from the lfs? Thanks, Robby Last edited by robby1619 at 15-Mar-2005 08:29 |

You need to check the rock first to make sure it will not increase your PH. Do this by scratching the rock with a nail, then poor a bit of vinegar on it. If it fizzes do not put it in your tank. If it doesn't fizz then do as you planned (boiling it) and you should be ok. Most rock from the ocean will definitely raise your PH. Test any rock you want to put in a tank, even if it comes from a LFS. |

Many contain materials that can leach out into the water and change your chemistry and/or harm your fish. If you've ever used any kind of pesticides or herbicides in your garden I wouldn't use any of those as even trace amounts not removed could have a negative effect. I know there are simple household solutions you can pour over the rocks your interested in to test them, but I'm not positive what they are however, I know you will get some further response as to how to do this |
