you should make sure that (c) is the highest point in the cave. If not you could have a big air bubble both taking up space in your cave, and if big enough, could cause some buoyancy problems. Will the 1-1/4" pipe fit snugly in the hole in your texas holey rock? if not you could have some problems with getting gravel falling through the cracks or visibility of the pipes....

Should work, but what is (a) made from, and where does (e) run to? And what about solid waste build-up?

If (a) is 14/ of a 4' pipe for example, you might need to shove it at an angle and put (c) up one end so it is at the highest point. The air stone should move the area enough anyway, but you also need to avoid air building up and floating your cave.

If (e) runs into the side of the cave, what stops the gravel going through the hole? Or does it go under? in which case, is it buried or visible? If buried, could it be easier to build something in that will be less likely to get clogged, like a drilled PVC pipe?

Could it be beneficial to build in a fake floor for the cave, and silicon a layer of gravel to it, in order to stop waste building up in there and forcing you to regularly disassemble it? The air stone and water movement should be enough to move it off a single layer, but I'd be a bit concerned about thicker layers. At least with a fake floor you could block (d) and shove your syphon hose down (c) occasionally without destabilising the whole thing.

Its very interesting, it'd be a fantastic idea for burrowing cray too! I'd love to see pictures as it goes along!

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

K I just spent all morning in the chat room here and I have a couple of modifications to make to the idea thanks go to Alex and GT for this idea.

No Air stone - going to put in a small water pump from an old fountain and run the output into the pipe originally used for the airstone, that way the cave will only have a positive water pressure and will just be moving water out into the tank. Will also cause a dramatic decrease of detritus build up as the current only goes out of the cave and not in.

Super Lion it will be snugly fitted. But I am thinking of going with the idea of regular rocks and silicone and building a custom rock cave entrance. Plus by going this route I am not limited to the size of the tunnels being the size of the Holes in the rocks. I will probably go for 3 inch piping at this point as well.

Callatya Everything is made from drilled PVC pipe As far as E is concerned in this setup it was going out the side at the back of the tank the pipe would have been covered by Java Moss. However with the water pump idea I think just completely burying the pipe in the substrata will work best. Also I think your third point is taken care of too, Any concerns with anything that we might have overlooked?
