Hi friends just a little warning if you have terracotta pots in your tank please make sure there are no fish in it before you try to remove it. Today I was cleaning out the tank I had removed everything bar this terracotta pot I went to lift it out and there was a few fish in it some panicked as they do and rushed out the pot but there was a spotty Cory in there with them and as the panicked and fled the poor Cory panicked and went the other way trying to get through the little hole in the back the Poor boy got stuck fast and I mean really stuck he could not get out front ways or back ways he struggled and struggled I gently pushed but could not get him out in the end I managed to release him by gently pushing his top fin down and holding is bottom fins in but boy what a shock it was. I have left the pots out for now. The Cory seems to be ok at the moment I shall keep an eye on him.

Sorry to hear about this - hope he will be alright

I use pots with no hole in them - and remind people to ensure that they are throughly cleaned b4 putting in the tank

Beware of heater gaurds as well - I had a yoyo loach who went down one and cooked himself (he was so well done he broke in half - not LOL)

Regards

Dave

Mmm... yes, that's why you should make sure that the holes in the bottom of the pot are VERY small, so that no one could possibly get through. Either that or break the hole to the point where it can be a tunnel for anyone. In other words, it's wide enough to allow access by any of your fish.

There's been warnings about this in the past, and is generally mentioned when suggested pots in the first place. *shrugs*

I'll have to do something about mine then I know my metae fry love to play "peek a boo" with the holes and use them as an easy entrance or escape I think when I go to seal my 55 gallon back up I'll just use one of the cabs and seal it to the pot...better safe than sorry, and i hope your little guy is doing fine...

Definitely a warning to remember. I lost a female paradisefish after she got stuck in the hole overnight

You have to take care, not only with pots, but with everything you add or remove from your tanks. Fish are quite delicate, so take care.

Even Tank ornaments can sometimes be trouble I had a wonderful castle ornament that I loved...well somehow my pleco would dig into the gravel and get into the hole on the bottom...I'd start to notice he was missing for 2-3 days, and pull out the castle, and shake, pull, whatever him out...fill ornament with gravel put back into tank...I finally decided it wasn't worth it and took it out for good, and the sad thing is I really liked that castle

Yep i have had a nasty incident with a julli cory, he got stick real fast and i had to transport him to the local petshop to get the guy to release him. Due to panicking he rubbed a nasty sore on his body just before his top fin starts. Which i used melafix for? He recovered really well then 3months after i just found him floating i was gutted as you can imgain!!

plug these holes! cork, silicone, superglued-on mesh, anything !
