Is it hard water stains? If so, something acidic like vinegar and a razor blade should get it off.

Cory addict is right, if its a glass tank use a straight razor blade (carefully of course no chopping off fingers or other body parts and blaming it on us ) to scrape it off.

just a quick question, but are you a smoker? if it's nicotine stains, there's not a lot you can do for cleanup. maybe tar remover will work, but otherwise most things will not clean it.

I am a smoker and what takes aways the nicotine stains very well is vinegar, also swipe, there is one that has vinegar in it, that worked great for me with both stains, of course it wasn't a running tank, i did it when i tore down one of mine and everything got cleaned.

A friend had the same problem and he used Brasso (a metal polish liquid), on the glass, i thought that was a bit extreme, but the glass of his tank looked like new, and i guess he did an extra special effort rinsing it, because his fish are happy, and they are a 3 y/o couple of breading discus.

Just a suggestion but try nail polish remover (or anything Acetone based) Only try it in a corner or something to make sure it will not harm thet glass...it shouldn't if it is glass.

Nail polish remover, or anything acetone based? This may work on a glass tank (I've never tried it and not gonna knock it) but MAKE SURE IT IS GLASS B4 YOU TRY AND STAY AWAY FROM THE SEAMS. Also, DON'T try it if you suspect it may be acrylic or plastic. Acetone will eat a hole right thru it if it is. seen acetone eat a hole thru a tile floor in about 15 seconds. Try CLR maybe

Okay Gas is NOT something I'd suggest for use near a fish tank.

Lets keep in mind that this is a fishtank that needs to be able to house living beings that want to remain living.

Thank you Diver for pointing that out about Acetone, I agree it will harm acrylic and plastic tanks. Although being a flooring installer for about 10 years, and a tile installer for even longer I have never heard about or seen Acteone "eat a hole in a tile floor in less than 15 secs". I truly think you are misinformed. Acetone is a powerful cleaner, but it's not that powerful by any stretch of the imagination.

if your tiles were made of styrofoam, then acetone would eat through it pretty fast. personally, i use isopropyl alcohol for cleanups, and if that doesn't work there's a product called "goof off" which is good for cleaning, but it's slightly harmful and i would not use it on an established tank.

Acetone will harm acrylic....but rubbing alcohol or NON-acetone nail polish remover works well.

OK, it didn't eat a hole all the way thru the tile, but in the time it took to drop a rag to the floor there was a VERY noticable blemish where the tile had been eaten away.
apoligizes for exaggerating a bit
