b/c people make big deals about the tinting thing. i never notice it and i never boil or soak my wood either. but the carbon could probably remove the tannins before they could acumulate in the water column.
as for the water displacement it might jsut be b/c the size of the tank.

Carbon will remove much of the tannins, but carbon does need to be replaced. Since you purchased your wood it may have been presoaked and wouldn't have as much tannic acid in it as a piece that you might have found. Also different types of wood have different ammounts of tannins.

It also isn't always so noticible right away, three days may not make enough of a difference for you to notice it. The only reason I notice it in one of the office tanks is that when I do water changes the water shows up as not compleatly clear in my white water change bucket.

One way to check is to compair your PH to a test taken right before you added it and with one that you take now, also look @the water against a white background.
HTH a bit .

Hey I got a piece of driftwood from Dr. Foster and Smith too.

How is it right now? Did you have to boil it or anything special?

Also, I have a tiny hold in the wood...should I be worried about fish getting stuck in it?

Yeah, Foster & Smith's driftwood is pre-cured.

Ok, I put in the driftwood but now I'm waiting for the plants!
