small tank suggestions? (updated pics) | |
Theresa_M Moderator Queen of Zoom Posts: 3649 Kudos: 4280 Votes: 790 Registered: 04-Jan-2004 | Here's the latest pic, foil background gives off some reflection though. I'm happy with how it's coming along. My plants should be delivered by the end of the week, and I want to buy more pebbles. Since I removed the fry I won't be doing water changes as frequently. I'm wondering if there's anything I could do to hide the corner filter or just leave it as is? For aesthetics sake, I'd probably switch over to gravel substrate, but I understand the ease of cleaning deal. I have the five gallon mini bow too and I'm trying to figure out how to hide the internal whisper filter it came with... Can you put a small handful of gravel under the pebbles where the wisteria would go to give it a better substrate to root in? I don't know how well that would work for your cleaning routine, but I'd think it would help the plant a bit. I can't tell if there are roots on the plants, but if there is, you could just wedge it between pebbles. I'd think it would basically act as a submerged floater then, because it would still be getting it's nutrients from the water column... I think. Good luck! ~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~ |

Falstaf Fish Addict Posts: 785 Kudos: 1211 Votes: 196 Registered: 12-Feb-2004 | That's wisteria floating?? If it is, plant it in front of the filter! they grow better planted than floating and it will also gro waster and lushier, once grown you can start cutting and replanting Looks really good! |

Theresa_M Moderator Queen of Zoom Posts: 3649 Kudos: 4280 Votes: 790 Registered: 04-Jan-2004 | My plant order arrived today I now have 3 small vals in the tank, bunched together right now. I put java moss through the middle hole on the driftwood and also attached some to a pebble; that's in front of the filter. And I got rid of the hornwort and have nice bunches of wisteria and water sprite floating. Oh there's a moss ball in there now too! My husband is away for the weekend and has the camera, I'll have to post a pic next week. Thanks again to everyone for the ideas, I really like how this tanks looks now. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

Theresa_M Moderator Queen of Zoom Posts: 3649 Kudos: 4280 Votes: 790 Registered: 04-Jan-2004 | Thanks, I really like it as well. I'm not fond of equipment showing either. As small as the filter is, it seems to stand out. I forgot to measure the tank when I shopped for the driftwood so maybe an inch or so is actually out of the water. My original plan was to have it in the center of the tank but the height makes that impossible with the location of the light. I think it looks better off to the side. I need to vacuum again today, messy hornwort and plec The plec stays but the hornwort is history. I'll hide the filter than, buy more pebbles today, and hopefully will have the plants by Sat. Unfortunately no updated pics until next week; my camera is going out of town with my husband ]:| ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

Falstaf Fish Addict Posts: 785 Kudos: 1211 Votes: 196 Registered: 12-Feb-2004 | wow!! that driftwood piece is awesome! I personally hate when the equipment is showing, so I always hide it behind something, then again I'm obsessive and compulsive I would hide it in the back corner behind the wood, and if you are getting some valls then plant them in front of the filter, that way the wood will have a good green fr |

Theresa_M Moderator Queen of Zoom Posts: 3649 Kudos: 4280 Votes: 790 Registered: 04-Jan-2004 | Please excuse the pics, I never have luck getting good shots with acrylic bowfront tanks. They give a good idea of what the tank currently looks like though. This is an Mini-Bow 5g which is my Endler's fry tank. It's also home to a very small whitespot bulldog plec. I have polished pebbles as a substrate; being a fry tank I do a vacuum/water change at least 3 times a week and the pebbles really simplify the job. There is a small corner filter, and floating anacharis, hornwort, and java moss. The tank is on my kitchen counter so I see it all the time. I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do/change/add to spruce it up a bit, it seems kind of dark and dull to me now. Theresa_M Moderator Queen of Zoom Posts: 3649 Kudos: 4280 Votes: 790 Registered: 04-Jan-2004 | Well it's turned into a major renovation The fry went back into my Endler's tank and are doing fine there. I took almost all the pebbles out so my plec has a day or two to feast on all the algae. Bought a nice piece of driftwood and that's soaking. Will stay with the foil background for now. And lastly I made a plant order today, including a moss ball for this tank, a few vals, and some more floaters (haven't decided which will go in this tank yet). I'm excited about how it's going to look...now I just have to decide who is going to live in it ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

Theresa_M Moderator Queen of Zoom Posts: 3649 Kudos: 4280 Votes: 790 Registered: 04-Jan-2004 | Wow you guys are great Until I make a definite decision I took off the black background and went with the foil (very cheap ) Just doing that made a huge difference and brightened the tane immensely. Natural or not? I'm not sure, my first thought would be natural but it might be fun to do something different. My other tanks have lava rocks, terra cotta, fake rocks. I'd like to stick with live plants though and attaching java moss to something sounds like a good idea. Husband is going to be gone for the weekend, maybe I'll browse the lfs around here and see what's available. Thanks for all the help so far! ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

Mn_Rick Hobbyist Posts: 106 Kudos: 105 Votes: 0 Registered: 05-Jun-2004 | How about not putting anything else inside, but put white paper on the back, and put plastic plants in front of the paper? I do that for my Betta tanks. |

Falstaf Fish Addict Posts: 785 Kudos: 1211 Votes: 196 Registered: 12-Feb-2004 | I would add a big piece of driftwood, that covers from one side to another of the tank (easy to clean to) and maye just add some vals in the back, they do great when planted in pebbles, i know they are not supossed to, but they do. Then attach some of the java mos to the drift wood and it will look great |
