angeleel![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fish Addict Posts: 561 Kudos: 472 Votes: 61 Registered: 08-Feb-2005 ![]() ![]() | Would it be possible to add any sort of cory bottom feeder to my 29 gallon??? The angels are the only fish in there. My tank is kept at 78 to 80, it has gravel, and is heavy planted (FAKE),It also has a great filter for 40 to 50 Gallon,I do gravel vacs once a week, I also change water once a week 35% to 50%. Comming summer there will be driftwood. Any help would be fantastic! Thanks Angel Eel |

Do you plan to add any more fish besides the cories? If so, what? Cories would be a great choice in any community tank, they are one of the most peaceful bottom feeders in existence. These little clowns are fun to watch, and work hard at eating food scraps that sink to the bottom, making the tank cleaner. Just remember, cories should be kept in groups for best effect. They are happier this way, less susceptible to disease, and more active as well. If you want some cories, you could fit a shoal (at least six) of any existing species. None grow much larger than three inches, so your currently bottom feeder-free tank will have plenty of space for a crowd of cories. Figure out which kinds interest you, then report back here with your ideas. Good luck, and good choice on the cories! ![]() EDIT: Before I forget, cories tend to like temperatures on the cool end of the tropical scale, from around 72 to 76 degrees for many species. You might want to turn your tank's temp down a little before you get any cories. Angelfish don't need a temperature of 80 anyways, so there will be no harm in lowering the heat. As for what kind of Corydoras I'll have to take a look at my LFS's and on aquabid and see what I like then I will get back to you. Thanks for the help!! Angel Eel EDIT:Would 10 be pushing it or should I find out what kind first. Last edited by angeleel at 05-Apr-2005 15:27 |

I wouldn't put ten C. aeneus or C. paleatus in a twenty-nine gallon, though ten of most other cories would be great. The potential size of each species is the most important factor to take into account; that and the hyperactive nature of the above two cories. |

They top out at around an inch in size, and are hyperactive little things. They can often be seen swimming about their tank, and have no problem leaving the substrate. They like to cruise off the bottom, often in areas with some level of current. These are nifty little cories, that can become lost (not really, just hard to find) in large tanks. I will caution you though, these cories can be delicate. They are some of the least hardy fish in the genus, partly because of their small size. If you want to get some habrosus, make sure that you get a big group (at least ten), and be sure to keep up with your tank maintenance. Still, don't be surprised if you lose a few. They are like ottos, in that it can be hard to keep them alive, even with perfect water conditions. Last edited by sirbooks at 05-Apr-2005 15:51 |

A select few are not, including the dwarf cories (habrosus, pygmaeus, hastatus), and some of the truly longnosed species (I think semiaquilus is one of them). The longnosed cories tend to be hard to acquire though, so you really don't have to worry about them. You can have a nice shoal of just about any cory, all you have to do is be extra-careful with the dwarfs, and don't get too many of the large ones. |
