I have a 20 gallon tank and I have a huge problem with algae. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a smaller sized algae eater. I have 6 cories, 1 lemon tetra (I hope to get at least 3 more tetras), and one gold gourami. I would really appreciate some help with this. Thanks!

Personally, I'd get rid of the goldy if at all possible. He's a bit cramped in a twenty and may bully the other fish around. Then, I'd add maybe a small acistrus or par/otocinclus sp. to our tank. They are fairly good alage eaters and are fairly hardy once acclimated.

Clown plecos are nice, getting little more than a few inches. In a small community tank, ottos (Otocinclus sp.) are also welcome little algae eaters. Three of them will help to keep ur algae in line, but don't forget the true cause of algae:excess nitrate and light. Deal with the source if you truly want to control ur algae problem, but keep a side wall or two for ur algae eaters. Good luck!

Yesterday I got a small Indian Algae eater called sucker fish here. It cleared my entire 30 Gal tank overnight! just amazing!
It will grow quickly in size.. so will replace it with a smaller one after a few months.

Are there different types of ottos? I looked at one site and it said that they could get as big as 11", but this one says 1.9". Also I went to the LFS and the only type small enough is the gold algae eater. I couldn't find it on this site, so I was wondering if they are a hardy breed. I do like the ottos, so maybe I'll just have to look a little harder for some of those.

Perfect small algae eaters for the size-challenged aquarium. They do, however, like a well established tank that's been running for a while, and water on the softer side suits them best

Yes there is more than one otto, but most in the LFS and available to the hobby, are those that generally stay under 2 inches. I do not recommend the Chinese algae eater, as when it gets larger, it will try to suck on your fish, as it likes the slime on the other fish. This can become a real nusciance. As well, they get about 5 inches long.

Thanks everyone! I think I will take the time to track the ottos down.
