This question was asked by one of my professors:

She has three chinease Alge Eaters (2 male, 1 female)in her 75 g tank with some peaceful schooling tetras (from her description they sound like Black Skirts) She has recently noticed aggression between the 2 males. She also has observed the female going in to the castle-cave for awhile and one of the males going in after her. She thinks that they might have eggs in there? Any info will help, thanks a lot!

Two male anythings can sometimes be a problem. I am truly sorry as I have only kept single algea eaters in tanks, never in pairs. I can tell you that mine have grown up to 6 inches in length. What is your tank size?

Chinese algae eaters get more aggressive with age. So that probably explains the aggression. They are also known to suck the slime coats off other fish. I don't recommend them, as I had one kill two of my danios before.

I didn't keep mine very long, but it wasn't nocturnal. It came out all the time.

They are pretty good algae eaters when they are small, but when they get older they don't do as good a job. They get more carnivorous.

Like they said - they tend to get aggressive with age.
