Hey All,
I am going to pick up a trio of
Brochis Splendens cats today.
Is there anything special I should know about
them, or should I just treat them the same as cory cats.
They will be goin in my 5g QT, they are still
little guys.
So, do they have any special needs? Water or dietary?
They will be going into my 75g tank to replace
the pepper corys I lost during the power outage on
Monday night.
Thanks in advance!

They're pretty much the same as your average Corydoras except bigger and thicker. Adult C. paleatus reach pretty much the same length as adult Brochis splendens, so if the tank was set up to accomodate the peppered cories it will be fine for the Brochis. Just ensure that they have plenty of open space to forage in.

EDIT: Forgot to mention. More than three would be better. Just as with cories, Brochis can be shy when in small groups.

Hey Sirbooks,
thanks for the info.
The reason I am getting 3 is that that is all
the fish store has!
They are not planning on ordering them again,
so 3 will have to do.
I anticipate that they may hang out with my group
of C. Aeneus bronze/albino. Do you think
they will?

My tank is heavily planted but does have an open
area in the front for my bottom feeders to scrounge
around in.

Are they like Corys for feeding wise? Pretty much
omnivores?

I couldnt get in to pick them up today, but
probably in the next couple days.

I guess three would have to do. Brochis splendens is a common species in the U.S., and if that's the case in Canada you may see some more pop up soon.

Juveniles would be fairly likely to group with the similar Corydoras aeneus, but I would think that adult B. splendens would prefer their own company more.

Yep, they're the same as Corydoras as far as food goes.

In terms of care and behavior, they are nearly identical to most Corydoras species. I have noticed, however, that all Brochis species tend to dig deeper into the substrate than Corydoras when looking for food. That's why Brochis tend to have longer noses and stockier bodies, to aid them in these activities.

Generally it isn't much to worry about, but if you have any small, newly-rooting plants in the tank, the Brochis might cause them to come loose. This is generally only a concern with larger Brochis, though, and you shouldn'y have any problems with your juveniles.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

Thanks for the info, Sir, and Natalie,
I am looking forward to getting them.
It has been very cold, that is why the LFS
is holding them for me, I live a 40 mins drive
away, and in subzero temps, I dont want to risk
the poor fish. Its no problem, they will hold
them forever pretty much if I want, since I paid
a deposit for them!

Natalie - I am constantly having to replant my
val spiralis because of my bottom feeders. I dont
really mind too much, I keep fish first and plants
second! Besides, they all keep the gravel so nice
and clean I cant complain!
