i have three male BNs and ive been watching them of late (for a week or two) and ive noticed that one is different to the others both in shape and colour. if i was to describe the colour i would call the 2 dark chocolate and the other milk chocolatey or even a caramel colour. They all have bristles on their noses, and the lighter one is smaller and doesnt have the same shaped head. could it be a different species??

If you look on Planet Catfish under the Loricariidae family, you will be able to find profiles and pictures of many ancistrus catfish. These guys are commonly known as bristlenose catfish, so take a look through and see if you can find any that are similar to yours.

I too have two differnt looking ones. One of mine is dark brown with white spots. Almost black colored. And the other three look like normal plecos with bristles. I think thats why they suggest if you want to breed them to get all your breeders from the same group. Because there are alot of differnt kinds mixed together in the trade. I tryed breeding my black with the white spots to another one but they want nothing to do with each other.

I bought mine from the same lfs, different times...one I describe as dark chocolate, the other milk chocolate. I've never researched it much but it would be interesting to know if they're different species.

They are both Ancistrus sp. 3, also known as the common bristlenose. It's is a pretty variable species.

There can be contaminants in shipments of that species though. In fact, I just found this L182 in a shipment of common bristlenoses a few weeks ago (though I just decided to buy it on Sunday).
