ok 75g tank, current stock:
4 gold danios
7 peppered corys
2 dwarf apistogramma cachatoides cichlids
2 BN cat
3 panda corys
4 metae corys
6 pentazona barbs
6 flame tetras
2 blue rams
1 L127 (?) plec
3 discus
several MTS

the BN were keeping on top of algae on glass, but recently we have started noticing spots of green algae on glass at front and back. we have cut back on the veggies in the hope this might encourage them to clear the algae, but they arent doing it very quickly.

we have ottos in another tank and they are great at clearing algae. should we get some for this tank, or just give the BNs a chance??

any thoughts?thanks

The bristlenose probably won't do much with the green algae, as I've noticed that they are better with brown algae than the green. My Ancistrus keeps the tank mostly clear of brown algae, but I have to scrub out all the green stuff.
You can give the ottos a try if you want, or just get rid of the algae yourself through scrubbing or by eliminating the source. Removing the ottos from their tank might let the algae there start to thrive, so it would be a better idea to just take care of the green algae yourself.

Green spot algae is very difficult, if not impossible, for BNs to eat, and the same would go for otos as well. Little hard green spots like that have to be removed with a scraper of some sort - they're hard enough to remove by hand, let alone by the soft mouth of an oto. As mentioned before, they're good for certain types of algae, but other kinds you need to just keep on top of yourself.

Oh geez, I didn't notice that it was green spot algae. Your ottos aren't going to be able to eat that, and the BN definitely won't be able to either. You'll have to scrub that stuff off yourself, and it is a real pain.

siamese flying foxes will eat green algae and even scale algae, but theyd have to be desperate or utterly bored. Even then only full size adults like mine- about 6 inches long , it takes them to be that big before theyre strong enough to chip it off, and then theyre likely to go for anything else they can find first. I didnt use to think they ate it then one day all 6 of em went ballistic on an echinoda and completely cleared it in less than 24 hours which saved me having to do it, handy . Basically you will probably have to do it yourself.

My flying fox does not give a rats behind about any of the algae in the tank anymore now that it's big...
