A lfs worker/friend recently gave me a teeny tiny banjo cat. He purchased some at an auction in October. This little guy is approximately 1/2 inch long. I currently have him in my 10G quarantine by himself. I've done some research and I've gotten quite a bit of info but I'm wondering if anyone has or has had one of these guys. Any experiences to share?

i have 6 of these cool cats. you will rarly see it move in the day other then breathing. if you have sand substrate or light substrate it will burry itself into the substrate which can be a problem if you gravel vac, you could accidently kill them. on the good note these things are true scavangers and will eat almost anything, and if you substrate is light anuff it will help in turing over substrate preventing air pockets from forming. the only time you will see them move is at night even then its not very much. and they also make a croking noise if you take them out of water. breeding isnt too bad new water and a well fed female. female is fatter and rounder in shape male is thinnner and flatter.

Thanks, AWOL.

I did read that it's best to have only banjo cats as bottom feeders in one tank. It seems they are a bit slow about getting food and often the others beat them to it. Do you have any other bottom feeders?

Also, what have you been feeding? I put in some frozen daphnia the first day and a shrimp pellet last night but he didn't touch the pellet. I can't tell for sure if he ate any daphnia. Should I be worried?

I wouldn't be too worried....just make sure you put some food by him just before you turn the tank lights out...I am sure that he will get it.

yes they are a bit slow at getting food, but in my tank all my cats are quite nervous at comming out to get food it works out good. and as tortis said a pellet after 'lights out' will ensure they will get some food.

I had one that was probably 1/4 of an inch yep that small. I fed him right before or after the lights are out. I feed mine shrimp pellets mainly but he has tried other foods such as flakes and frozen worms, brine shrimp. Good luck with your banjo.
