Hi, my friend gave me some couries and I noticed that one of them have short or eroded barbels. Can they grow back ? Thanks.

They have most likely been eroded away by poor water quality. As long as you take care of them now, the barbels will grow back.

It depends on how good the conditions in your tank are, and how happy the cories are. I would say that it could take a couple of months.

Sometimes my gouramis bite off a barbel from my corys (algae wafer = feeding frenzy), and it usually grows back within a week.

Did we ever come up with a decent enough consensus on what causes barbel erosion?

I'm completely mystified as I have a few pandas that lost their barbels and my nitrates are O.
