I need an algae eater for a 55g. It has some semi-aggresive fish such as spiny eels, africa butterflyfish and more. It needs to be able to eat algae from rocks and bogwood. I already have a BN but it is hopeless. The only other Plec I have in there is a Green Plec which is ok but mainly eats meat so the algae gets left. We had a Common in there which was a great algae eater but one day it decided the eels slime coat was nicer so we took him back. My LFS lets you buy Gibbiceps or Commons at little sizes and then you can return them when they get too big so I could get something like that and return it. I am also planning to upgrade anyway to a 125 so size won`t really be a problem.

You can get a common Pleco, but it will grow big.

Well I had the Common, might go back to one of them.
I bought a Siamese Algae Eater (3 to be excact) and the next day all three had disappearred. This was only last week but aint seen them yet. I resume they got eaten by either the Featherfin, Eel or other fish in there.

Sorry about the double post but this post is the next day.

What are Gibbiceps like at eating algae?

Are there ant rare Plecs that could munch through the algae and not grow overly big?

What kind of algae is the problem? BN (and gibbiceps i suppose)are good with green algae, more "hairy stuff" might require ie. siamese algae eater or more wondering about the water parameters...

We have had the water checked and it is ok, we also double checked our selveves and it is fine. I will probably go with a Common or a Gibbiceps as they are the bigger Plecs that eat algae at my LFS and if they are too small will get eaten or attacked.
