"My LFS tank had a blue eyed plec for sale for $40 US"

I dunno, I highly doubt it. There have been only a handful of confirmed LFS sightings of this fish in the last, oh, three odd years.

Old World means they are native to Europe, Africa, Asia, or Australia, as opposed to New World which means native to the Americas.

Well, I guess it does help to have reputable breeders and a good auction like Aquabid. I've just heard so many Ebay horror stories that I'm skeptical of online auctions. I feel it's different buying from the lfs that get shipments... partially because if anything happens during shipment, it's the lfs' dime, not mine. that's why I only use stores that have a guarantee.

I didn't know you were into old world species, Jase.

Also, depending on what seller you go with, the fish can range from great to horrible. I've never, thus far, had a bad transaction via AB, but hey, maybe that's just me.

Just out of curiosity... how "safe" is it buying a fish online from an auction? I'm fearful of my fish just making it home from the lfs, nevermind shipping cross-country or even further. Maybe I'm just a scaredy cat when it comes to my little ones.

I've bought from several different sellers off aquabid and have only had problems with 1 of them. The rest have all sent excellently packaged, healthy fish. I'm in fact right now awaiting a group of 10 Pseudotropheus flavus that I won on aquabid the other day...they'll arrive on Wed.

If they are shipped properly, then they should arrive perfectly healthy. In fact, nearly all of the sellers on AquaBid guarantee that the fish will arrive alive and well.

And besides... Most of the fish you see in the LFS were farm bred all the way in Asia.

thats lot of money for a fish

You have no idea how rare this species is then. I'd take one in a heart beat if I had the proper tank and money.

The Blue Eyed Panaque does not have an L number, however Panaque cochliodon is the more common of the two species described. Panaque suttonorum is the other Blue Eyed Panaque and is even rarer, partly because of its unknown current existence in the wild.

My LFS tank had a blue eyed plec for sale for $40 US. Does anyone have an L# for that fish as his pic was not available. I must investigate as I did not see it in the tank(and didn't ask), but was labeled as, on the tank. Ive only purchased 1 fish there that was "labeled" wrong, and that was my Hybrid Syno. If anyone can shoot a L# or scientific name or picture, I will call them now to see if they still have it, and will go check it out.

Well, these fish are pretty dang rare. Plus, they are really nice looking when healthy and happy, which creates extra demand. If you've got the cash and the need to own these fish, they are certainly worth it.

There are blue eyes for sale about every other week on AB. Most of the recent ones have been looking pretty shabby, though about a month ago, this GORGEOUS jet black paaque with light blue eyes was auctioned off for less than the current one is going for. What a shame.
