My bn is about 2 inches. It is looking a bit paler. Do they change colour? Is it a sign of ill health?

Well I had this same question awhile ago and sort of figured out what was causing my part.. ok the lfs i usually go to has several tanks of bn's and in the lower ph tanks that they kept them in they were usually darker brown almost black with the south american setups like their discus and dwarf cichlid tanks, but in the ones where they where in the higher ph of over 7.5 they were usually a lighter brown. dont know if that helps

Yes it does help. My tank is a mbuna setup. Is the bn not suitable?

BN will change their colour to try and blend in with the surroundings in the tank, or sometimes if they are stressed

OH TOLEEDY!

My bristlenose can range in colour from a very dark brown to black right up to a pale brown. Sometimes they even appear splotchy.

I've noticed they get paler when I do a water change so it could be an indication of stress levels

Those who say they cant, Never will !!!

We'll ive never kept them in ph that high as all my tanks are SA, but this store has been doing it for years in there show tanks with phs ranging from 6.5 to 9+ with out any problems that ive seen. Hmmmm time to go back and look at there 550 gallon discus tank Hmmmmmm.
Anyways my bn changes colors from splotchy browns to dark browns all the time probably just a little stressed if he's CHANGING colors all the time, but if he is just a paler brown its probably the ph thing
