Hi All,

I'm a bit of a noob at keeping fish. I've been looking at a tank: 2feet high X 2 feet wide X 1 foot long. I'd like to try keeping 2 or 3 Clown Loaches, but I think this tank would be too small. Can anyone recommend a similar bottom feeder? (Preferably this tank would have a mixture of fish, so something peaceful!)

Thanks!

Yes, that is an interestingly shaped fish tank, and using the calculator on here, only 30 gallons. That's a little small for clown loaches unless you plan on upgrading to at least a 55 gal. I would suggest pretty much any type of cories, or if you want algae control-otos or a bristlenose pleco.

edit: I forgot to mention Yoyo loaches, similar to clown loaches. I have never had them but according to what I've heard and what I see at our pet shops, they stay around 3-4". They might be what your looking for.

Considering ur tank is 2ft high, but hte surface area is only 2ft by 1ft, the surface area would only be 1800cm sq. As such, the choice of bottom feeders would be pretty limtied coz of the small surface area. (number of fish is dependent on ur surface area of the tank, hence a longer tank is more preferable over a higher tank with a small base).

I'd go with small corys (habrosus, pygmaeus, or hastatus). Or a small school of ottos? If ur tank is a bare-bottom tank (ie no substrate), you could get a couple of kuhli loaches. This is because if u have substrate, u'relikely not 2 see them for weeks at end. But without a substrate, u'll be able to see them most of the time.

Maybe a small loricariid (besides ottos) such as peckoltia vittata or panaque maccus (candy stripe pleco and clown panaque). These loricariid have interesting colouration and do not grow as big as many of their loricariid cousins.

Personally I'd stick with the smaller cories. There seems to be conflicting info on the max size of dwarf loaches (Botia sidthimunki).
