If they are different, what are the differences?. http://www.deathbydyeing.org/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

"Bristlenose pleco" and "bristlenose catfish" are just two names for fish from the same genus, genus Ancistrus. I thought I had explained this to you in a PM? ![]() |

Yes sirbooks, I got your PM, but at the LFS they seem different. The ones i have are listed as :- Ancistrus Dolichopterus. http://www.deathbydyeing.org/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

Ancistrus dolichopterus is one of the more common ones, though it is not the true common BN that some mistake it for. Dolichopterus look quite different from other Ancistrus species, and it is easy to tell them apart. If you do have a true A. dolichopterus, you've got quite a beauty! These fellows are also known as the starry bristlenose, because of the bright spots on the black background. You can see a picture of one below. ![]() |

They where listed as Bristlenose catfish with the latin name as Ancistrus Dolichopterus. The LFS also had some Bristlenose Plecos & they looked exactly like a Bristlenose. My only problem is, that i don't want them to be Pleco's that grow to 30cm or more. I want them to stay small 10cm maximum. http://www.deathbydyeing.org/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

Even if they did grow huge, it would be worth it to have it in the tank. Thanks for posting the picture. I wish my closest lfs would stock some of those. ![]() |

They typically grow to only eleven or so cm. Yours will likely not exceed that, as larger specimens are rare. On top of that, Ancistrus catfish tend to be slow growers. They can take a few years to reach full size, so yours will be nice and small for some time. My male bristlenose has not grown more than a millimeter or two since I bought him, and that was three or four months ago! |
