Why not just separate them? Or get rid of one half of the pair? Or swap so you have two of the same sex?

Still, I like the idea of selling them best!

Try to sell to any fish store for about 25 % of the retail price.. That's $5. per fish for you, or look into how to ship fish etc.. For $10. a pop plus shipping.
I did have a link before on shipping fish although I've never tried it, I'll try to find it.

this may sound silly, but it has sorta worked for me in the past. cut the top third off a clear 20oz water/soda bottle. put a few rocks and some food in the bottle. stick the cut part back in the bottle upside down (the opening now points to the bottom). place in bottom of the tank. works kinda like a miniature minnow trap.

someone first suggested this setup to me for catching snails, but i always wound up with a bottle full of cories.

Congrats with your BN's. Don't seperate them, leave them together & stop grumbling about breeding. Most of us would like to be in your place & have a breeding pair of BN's.

I would raise them & sell them & don't forget to keep some.

Try laying one a jar, like a canning jar or something bigger if you've got it in it's side with the goodies inside. Then when you see some in there put your net over the end and lift it out.

Good luck, Mike

I really don't want to seperate them as I would be too worried that the one put into a new tank might die and I do want them to breed to sell but I just wish I could catch them easier;. Am really suprised at the number of babies they have produced so far as they really aren't very big with the male being at most 10cm and the female just a tad smaller.

Will try that take-away container trick sumthin fishy it it sounds like a good idea.

hi,

i dont know if this will work but i just thought id give you an idea. its kinda a similar idea to crab traps.

place a plastic container (like a take away container) at the bottom of the aquarium. place all the goodies these guys like to eat in it and turn off the aquarium light and leave it for an hour or so. hopefully most of the babies will go in their to feed. then, being careful not to spook the fish (which is why it might be alot easier in dark/very dim lighting) carefully reach inside the tank and place the lid on the container then simply lift it out.

alternatively you can place your net, or some kind of netting flat on the bottom of the aquarium and do the same thing as above except tie the 4corners of the frame of your net with fishing line and leave it long enought to hang out of the aquarium. that way you can quickly yank it out of the water without getting your hands wet and the fish will not be spooked by you reaching in the tank! i hope that all makes sense. sorry if it sounds stupid! have never tried it, just an idea....

alternatively i'm sure many of us in this forum including myself would gladly help rid you of your "burden"

hope this helps!

Our Bristlenose catfish just wont stop breeding, we have already taken around a couple of hundred babies out of our tank about 6 months ago and they have continued to breed with quite a few more babies turning up just the other day. There are now far too many in the tank, it's a 4 foot community tank with guppys, platies, neons, a betta, 2 kuhlis(absolutly awesome fish even though basicly only see them at night, a flying fox and obviously bristlenose(2 breeders and lots of their offspring). It is impossible to catch them as they are far to quick and some too small, last time we caught them had to totally empty the tabke of ornaments, plants, wood and the other fish and as it was it took over an hour to catch them all. Does anybody know of a way I could 'trap' them in the tank as I really don't wont to take everything out but they really need to go as like I said before there are far too many of them. Any help would be appreciated.

On a side note why the hell are bristlenose so expensive here in OZ at the moment? About $20 for ones a few cm long! When I bought 2 a couple of years ago they were $5.50, they sadly died and the 2 breeders we have now were given to my mum by a friend last year. They obviously aren't hard to breed if they've done it for us.

I don't know about catching BN babies, but I used to catch guppy fry with a siphon. Get a long bit of clear tubing about 1-1.5 cm across. Start siphoning into a bucket, then block one end of the tubing with your finger or thumb. Put the siphon near the babies and take your thumb off the tubing. The fry get sucked up into the bucket.

Unfortunatly we don't get $20 for each fish but with the first lot we took out I gave them to my brother to sell (but not to keep all the money), don't know how much exactly he got for them but the last lot he sold he got $50 and he still has some left and now their bigger so he should get more for them but I don't get the money for the fish anyways as their my mums. As with taking out the thing they breed in, I did that last time but kept the male in the tank, only a few of the eggs hatched, after this they haven't bred until now (which has been a couple of months) and now he isn't doing it in the same thing and I'm not sure were he is doing it now. Will try the thing with the veges but am pretty sure they'll swim off too quickly.

Thanks for the replies.

well if the stores sell for 20, you could sell to them for 10, and if you can raise even only 10 out of a batch to sellable size, thats $100 per round of breeding. I see potential for financing a bigger tank

As far as removing them, the best time to do it is when the eggs are laid and being guarded by Papa BN. Take a container (plastic shoebox or something similar), put it in the tank, gently lift the pot/stone/driftwood that the budding family is under, and place the whole works in the container. You can then lift out the container and put it in a separate tank for raising purposes. You could keep Papa in the new tank, apart from Mama, and get a breather from all the breeding. Alternately, you could give the pair to almost anyone on the Bottom Feeder Frenzy Forum; we'd be glad to take them off of your hands!!

As for trapping, I'd try putting in some fresh veggies, like blanched lettuce, cucumber, and zuchinni. My BN loved these, so I guess you could put some in and when they all start eating, pull them out and put them into your grow-out tank or whatever.
And like sirbooks said, since they're so expensive, why dont you sell them back to your lfs to make a profit?

I don't know why they cost so much, but to get rid of the unwanted fry, may I suggest adding a fish that would eat them? Or, if you had patience, (and another tank) you could raise the fry, and sell them for $20 apiece!
