Hi i just bought a tiny BN (only 1 inch long at max)
and i cant find any pics that look remotely like him in colouration. his a very dark brown with white spots and i can find no evidence of bristles(even with magnifying glass)
Do bristles come with age?

thanks for input

Yes, the bristles do come with age, but if you can't see any trace of them yet it is likely that the fish is a female.

It sounds like it might be a [link=L182]http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/ancistru/644_f.php" style="COLOR: #FFFFFF[/link], especially if you found it among regular Bristlenoses. I have two L182s, both of which I found as contaminants in shipments of Common Bristlenoses.

Are you sure they were found amongst common ancistrus? I do not know of any other ancistrus commonly passed off as "common" from the Rio Branco. Also, I'm surprised your LFS still stocks wild bristlers.

Absolutely sure. Common Bristlenoses are the only kind we order, and that's what they came in with. We always order wild-caught fish if possible.

I guess there must have been a mishap in the wholesaler's stocking tanks, but either way, it's safe to say you got the better end of the deal.

Hey all again,
another bristlemose quessie...
i just saw a very pretty BN labbeled as "peppermint BN"
before buying him i thought i do some reasearch the closest i could find to him was L255.
Is this the right species? i noticed the picture looks quite mature and has no bristles..
plus the keeper said it wasnt a very big species only about 4 inches at max

Peppermints usualy refer to ancistrus dolichopterus. If it has no bristles, it's not likely to be a L-255; they are a very distinct looking species.

The Albino BNs are really nice, hardy fish. They also don't seem to be as affected by the light as other BN and are out most of the day.

Here's a pic:

You sure the peppermint bristlenose isn't just a young common bristlenose? [link=http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/ancistru/49_1.php]http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/ancistru/49_1.php" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link]

Here's the information to go with the pic [link=http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/ancistru/49_f.php]http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/ancistru/49_f.php" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link] One thing it says"The common Bristlenose is commonly captive bred and almost impossible to identify to species. It is not assigned to species here for that reason, it may well be a hybrid." so that pleco may be an uncommon color of a common fish. I've only seen plain brown bristlenose but I haven't really paid attention.
