Unfortunately I can't provide a picture of the fishes in question because of technical problems with my camera, but, I can give the following description of three identical large Plecs that turned up at my LFS yesterday.

The largest specimen is 12 inches in length, possibly even more. The fish resembles in appearance this photo of Glyptopterichthys joselimianus, but there are key differences, namely:

[1] The body markings are semi-regular posts, not vermiform markings as on the photographed fish linked above (though the colour scheme of light yellowish spots on a choclate brown base colour is virtually identical);

[2] The dorsal fin isn't quite as sail like on the fishes at my LFS as seen in the image link;

[3] The oral sucking disc possesses two VERY noticeable barbel-like protrusions, which initially made me think of Leporacanthicus galaxias, the Vampire Plec, but the colour scheme is wrong (at least when compared to the Planet Catfish photos of that species), and if anything, the barbels are even larger than those I've seen on past specimens of galaxias;

[4] The fish does not possess overly prominent body odontodes (certainly not like some of the manifestly sawtooth ones I've seen on some Pseudacanthicus species) but is still a chunky and muscular fish, and definitely has odontodes even if they are, shall we say, somewhat modest in size;

[5] Spotted markings cover the entire body and all fins, with the pattern semi-regular, body spots (particularly toward the caudal peduncle) being in some cases shaped like squares with rounded corners, fin spots being circular or oval, and as the eye traverses the fish toward the caudal peduncle, the spots form 5 or 6 rows, the pattern becoming more regular toward the tail.

Until I can sort out what's wrong with my camera, this description will have to suffice.

Any ideas anyone (Cup_of_Lifenoodles in particular)?

The only fish that comes to mind is the goldie pleco. Is that it?

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Pretty much every genus has a similarly marked species. I'd need a better description than that. Sorry, bud.

Bleh. Had a feeling this one would be difficult.

Until I get a replacement battery for my camera (and find out if that's the reason why my camera has stopped working) then I can't do anything other than give a description.

Oh, and Sirbooks, the Goldie Plec isn't the fish in question. That fish has no spotting on the fins (at least in the illustrations I just checked).

Trouble is, this fish looks at first sight as if it could be a Gibbiceps, but the colours are reversed - Gibbiceps have dark spots on a light background. Likewise, it's different enough from a Galaxias now that I've had chance to check the photos for me to abandon that ID too.

Double post.

Camera now fixed. Bought new lithium ion battery because the old one died. Hope to have pics in due course. Watch this space.

Got pics of this beast at last!

Actually, there are two of them. First photo is the smaller specimen, the second photo is of the one that's about a foot long (note nice handy Blue Gourami trying to steal the limelight as I took the pic ).

Take a look at these and see if they help. Both specimens the same species from what I can gather, unless of course anyone knows better ...

Here's the first photo ...
