My peppermint bristle nose never seems to come out in the day when I give it an algae wafer, and then the other fish eat it since the bristle nose isn't. If I put it out when the lights go out at about 9:00pm, will my peppermint bristle nose be able to see it is there and find it and eat it?

Plecos are nocturnal, they are night dwellers and look for food at night, but each birstolenose has their own personalities. I got 2 in my 55 gal, one of them would only come out at night and the other one is still active in when the lights are on! Is this a new bristlenose? If so they are quite shy at the beggining when intorduced into a new tank but once established they would roam the tank more.

Gee

!!I think I just learned somthing new!!

My peppermint bristle nose has been in my tank for nearly a year now and has spent the whole time hiding except for once in a while I will see him for a few minutes, then he'll dart back to his bogwood.

you might like to sit in front of your tank one night after the lights go out - either set up a lamp near by (not shining into the tank) or just keep the room lights on. as your eyes adjust you'll see a whole new world of fish activity and behaviour. i used to sit and watch my upside down cats and plecos at night for a while - beautiful! and they can smell the food you put in for them even if they can't see it.

My male Albino Bristlenose usually hides all day I usually can only see his tail wagging just above the rocks. The female she is usually visible during the daylight hours though she doesnt do a lot of swimming. At night they are usually out and will chew on the algae waffers I drop in every two or three days. Last night I put in some cucumber and they didn't want it. Maybe the zebras will eat it today otherwise out it comes.

Don't forget also the wonders of the lateral line system, which bestows upon a fish the ability to sense its environment in a quasi-radar manner - the Blind Cave Fish is a superb example of this!

Most nocturnal or crepuscular fishes have a very well developed lateral line system for the purpose. Chances are your Bristlenose Plecs will use that for navigation, and use scent and taste to detect food.

Yes, Pleco's can see in the dark, as they are nocturial fish.
