That certainly eliminates loaches (unless you are willing to keep them in outdoor ponds), and actually, pretty much everything else. I really can't think of any bottom feeders that are easily spawned, unless you'd be willing to pick up some South American fish. |

If there was an easily spawned Asian bottom feeder in existence, I'd probably have come across it in 30 years or more of reading aquarium books and 5 years' worth of scanning the Web. If you're prepared to forego the ease of breeding, and want something that will prove relatively easy to keep, but challenging to breed (to put it mildly!) then Botia sidthimunki, the Pigmy Chain Loach, will probably be your best choice. Small enough not to create overstocking or stunting issues even in a modest sized aquarium, and a possible breeding challenge if you think you're up to it. Although I emphasise that while captive spawning has been observed (see www.loaches.com for more info), successful aquarium breeding (i.e., raising of fry) has yet to be achieved. Which means that if you do succeed here, you'll possibly be the first person ever to do so, and can bask in your fame by writing an article for all of us here at FishProfiles! Make sure you get true sidthimunki though. There are lookalike species that grow bigger. However, you'll soon know if you have true sidthimunki by the price. They are expensive. But well worth it if you can find them. ![]() |
