I was wanting a peaceful cat that would add character and color to the bottom of my aquarium (no cory cats, I already have a wonderful school of these little creatures). I was thinking upside down or raphael cats or some thing syndontis? I am a beginner to bottom feeders with the excpetion of cory cats/ ottos. Bristle- Nose maybe?

hmmm BN would be ruled out for colour i spose...striking colours are raphael catfish...or the (my fav) dianema urostriata (flag-tailed catfish) - they've got this marvellous tail with zebra like stripes on its caudal fin heheheh...upside down synos offer a 'reverse' colouring to normal catfish, so that may prove interesting for u....zebra plecos? (hahaahthey're the best in colouration)

Of the list you made, a Raphael isn't a very good choice. They get about 8 inches, and would therefore be crowded in your tank. Upside down cats only get to about 4 inches, so one of those would be a better choice. It really depends on what else is already in the tank. Most other synodontises... synodontis... synodontisi... whatever the plural is ... grow too large for a 29g.

With the exception of a few species, catfish aren't the most colorful family in the fish world. What did you have in mind?

Color is not so much an issue as originality and character thus an upside down would be fine. Thanx

I like the look of the albino BN. Mine aren't shy and just are busy all day long.

Aren't albino BN a bit pricy ($100+) even in the states. I know they are in Australia according to previous posts. Also the normal BN's at my LFS are some thing like $14 and no albinos have ever come there. What do you all pay for them?

At my work, three inch albinos cost around $15. They aren't that expensive at all, and I know that other stores have them priced at between $10-$20. Albino BNs are fairly common in the States, most areas have at least one store with these fish.
They have a lot of character, especially the well-endowed males. I just love the bristles on these guys, and they are tough in addition to being good-looking. You'd be able to keep one in a 29 gallon tank without problems, too.

You can get an Albino BN. Isn't the Black colour of a normal BN a colour.

What about regular BNs, my lfs is so irresponsible that anything that could possibly be of any use dies.

Yup, a normally-colored bristlenose would be fine as well. They are for all practical reasons the same fish as the albino BN, except without the white.
