While they may be distantly related, CAE's are more catfish than any minnow I've seen. That was just a starting idea, though I agree in that a featherfin synodontis would be a good choice.

My 'four line pictus' cat (either a Pimelodus Albofasciatus or P. Blochii)...

is doing well with a one foot oscar and some african cichlids.. He's almost 5 inches and chases the africans when they come near.. He also keeps a healthy distance from the oscar..

Also way more hearty and tough than its close cousin the pictus cat.

The Amazon Nut...

I think my stripped is a dodgy one then as mine hides in the log all the time and only see it once a month (if that)

i agree with koi keeper - i've got both types of raphael: spotted and striped. and aside from (imo) the spotted ones being ugly, the striped raphaels are way more active. i have to keep lifting up the rock my spotted raphael hides under to make sure it's still alive cause i haven't actually seen it swimming around on its own for at least 6 months. in contrast - the striped raphael is out at feeding time pretty much every night

Out of the two common raphael cats go for the striped one. It grows larger faster and is less shy.

Mine is in with 2 full grown oscars and is holding its own just fine.

Another one that has been cited in a magazine question & answer section that might work with your Convicts is another Doradid called Agamyxis pectinifrons. Again, armoured like a battle tank, and mean looking enough to make even spawning adults think twice about picking a fight.

I am currently considering a raphael cat. Thank you all for your ideas.

Raphaels and other Doradids should be fine, but likely to hide for the first couple of weeks until they get used to the aquarium as they're crepuscular in the wild (twylight active). However, they're armoured like M1 Abrams main battle tanks and covered in spines to boot, so your Convicts should leave them alone

Don't put in a Megalodoras irwini though, as these reach two feet and will eat your Convicts

definatley don`t go with a black lancer, they are really cool fish and I own one but they are not very good with aggressive fish such as cichlids, look at their fin that is huge compared to most, a cichlid would rip that to shreds in minutes and also they very shy so would be scared of the cichlids. The best option is a featherfin as they live with cichlids in the wild and would be able to handle themselves in that kind of tank no problems

the only catfish i could get to survive with my cichlids were raphaels - they're 'spiny' so everyone seems to leave them alone

You could probably consider several other types of catfish as well.
Featherfin synos are a good 1. What about striped or spotted raphael catfish? Or Black Lancer Catfish?
There are many many cool types of catfish, so dont just limit yourself to one choice!
Banjo Catfish
Raphael Catfish
Black Lancer Catfish
WhipTail Catfish
Upside Down Catfish
etc etc, check out planetcatfish.com for a complete list of catfish!

I have a 55 gallon aquarium in which I plan on housing a single male convict cichlid and a few large livebearers. The big question is, are there any cantfish I could house with these fish that will be able to hold their own against the convict? Also I am not really looking for a pl*co type catfish. Thanks in advance for any help.

sirbooks, cae's are not catfish. they are realted to minnows. i would agree that some sort of synodontis is best.

Leps are far less aggressive than most CA cichlids, such as the convict. However, I'd say the featherfin would be fine, as convicts aren't known to be nippy, just aggressive.

Another highly reccomended Synodont would be the nigris, or the false UDC. Very hardy and common, and can hold his own against convicts and the like.

I'm pretty sure i read on planet catfish the min tank size for clown syno is 70g

i keep my feathe4rfin with a banded leporinus and he can take care of himself so i'm pretty sure one would be able to look after itself with convicts
