depends on the size of the loach, i've heard horror stories of peoples loaches trying to eat large apple snails and stuff!

the mouths on loaches are designed to be able to combine scraping and snapping, so they're powerful enough to be able to do incremental damage to the shell of any snial. in terms of being able to eat a whole one at a single sitting rather than just inflicting gradual nightmare destruction, i guess that if you have a group of them they could finish off anything with less than a 1 inch shell diameter.
mainly peopple recommend loaches to cut out incipient infestations where there are a lot of smaller snails though

one of my 4 inch clowns would eat snails up to 1 inch across it all depends on how hungry and dedicated the loach is to eating that snail

I have only fed mine snails from an infested tank at a fish store. The store-keeper gave them to me for free. :%)

But then, these were really tiny snails, the biggest less than a centimetre in diameter. On the other hand, my clowns are very young, half an inch to about 3 inches in size and it took them a lot of determination to break into the shells.

It truly is about how determined the clown is to eat the snails. Put the snail in the tank early in the morning or about 11 am.

do keep an eye on the snail for signs of damage. As people have said, they can be pretty determined and can inflict damage enough to kill the snail even if they don't eat it outright.
