I went to my fav. LFS to get some plants and algea eaters, I was just gonna get common plecos, but the guy helping me said that they may eat my anubias. So I asked what he recommended and he said 2 clown plecos. I figured the general assumption of plecos being algea eaters so I had no problem. I get home and did a little research on my new fish and find out that they are not well known at all for being algea eaters and preferr fruits, veggies, and drift wood. Of course I about had a fit and returned them. But within 3 days they almost clear all of the algea out of a 55 gallon tank, and never once in a week touched the cucumber slice or apple slice i put in there. I ended up having to take the food out due to the fact that it was breaking up.

So I did a little more research through forums and found many other people who have had the same experience with clowns. So i have to ask, has anyone had clown plecos that had a similar behavior to what all of the profile say, or have they acted more like what I have experienced?

Other than their dietary information it seems that the rest of the informatin in the profiles is correct.

So anyway.... I just wanted to let everone know what I have found out.

thanks for letting me vent

Wood in the tank is preferred. The best way to feed them, actually, is to mash up carnivore and algae wafers, with maybe a smudge of bloodworm, and smear it all over a piece of wood. Sound delicious. The fry from clown spawnings seemed to do better on a meatier diet whence young, and tended to latch onto zuchinni and the like as they hit 1".

well i know that in the wild clown plecos like to munch on decaying fruits that fall in the water. but they do alot better as an algea eater than a fruit eater... i have 1 full grown one and 4 1 inch juveniles and they all eat either algea or algea wafers.. never fruit.. just keep up with the veggies..

Hi,
I have a clown pleco with my rams and he never seems to eat any algae in the tank but he loves algae wafers, and blood worms. I do not see him much only likes to come out when the lights are out but he has been around for around two years now.

My clown tends to spend most of his time on drift wood. He had really cleaned them up. Every once and a great while I see him on the side of the glass cleaning or on the rocks. Also likes some shrimp pellets and waffers.

My clown plec loved the logs spent most of his time on them, if not eating logs then gravel and finally glass. Never touched the vegies or wafer.

I've never seen my LDA01 (not a clown pleco but closely related) touch any of the algae in my tank, but he loves bloodworms and pieces of fruit.
