make sure you have enough driftwood in your tank. this is the clown pleco's natural habitat, plus they will eat off of it from time to time. you can feed them flakes, but they will also eat squash and zuchini (at least mine do). breeding them is considered difficult, so far i don't have the time or energy to go that route

I have 1 clown pleco in my tank and i have never seen it eat anything however the rest of the tank gets flake, sinking hikari wafers and other sinking pellets and i guess it gets some of this plus munching on the large amount of driftwood in the tank.

Gibson SG you know you want one!!

A common misconceptionn about these guys is that they are good algae eaters. They are not. The bulk of their diet is wood, and different types of wood are appreciated. Their diet should be supplemented with vegetable matter as moondog said.

mine only ate algae in the form of algae wafers. one of my 3 would eat certain algae off of certain plants, but for the most part clown plecos do not eat algae in any way.

I have just bought two clowns despite their unexpertise at consuming algae. I have two medium sized pieces of wood in the tank. Will these suffice for them?

LOL! As long as they don't eat it all up, I'm happy. But now I'm having trouble locating one of them. My luck with plecos isn't all that great as Bristlenoses that I had bought were always found dead the morning after. So I want to make sure that both of them are alive, are they always this shy? If I wanted to feed them when would be the best time to and for how long should I leave the food out?
