But C. metae is so much more common! I'd love to get my hands on some C. arcuatus for $2.99.

Actually, they sound like Corydoras arcuatus to me...

Here are some pictures for comparison.

Thanks for that i.d. sirbooks. I was expecting someone to say that they are very delicate and not suited to smaller aquaria. I am going to start cleaning the tank up tonight and hopfully get some cories in the next few months. Anyone else have any suggestions?

In a ten gallon tank, you're going to want small cories, ones that don't exceed 2 1/3 inches (6 cm) in length. Since cories should be kept in shoals, at least six or so are recommended. Pandas stay pretty small, but can be delicate and not suited for small tanks. The ones you described as "the ones that look like pandas but have the black arch going down their back" are probably Corydoras metae. They'd be fine in my opinion, because they are both hardy and small.

What types would you all recomend? There is a LFS in my town that gets assorted ones in for $2.99 each. I have seen pandas, albinoes, the ones that look like pandas but have the black arch going down their back and many others which are not given any names exept for assorted cory's.

How could you guys forget Ian Fuller's site? It's great for identifications and information on breeding.

yes, if you have to go somewhere else where they specialize in corries [link=planetcatfish]http://www.planetcatfish.com" style="COLOR: #00FF00[/link]

What kind of corries were you planning on putting in the 10 gallon? I still think the 10 is rather small, and even if you decide to go with the habrosus or other tiny corries the water parameters must be close to perfect or they get sick quickly...and then if you go with the larger ones you get overstocked rather fastyou know it is darned if you do, darned if you don't...

Best of luck on your decision, and let us know...heidi

Well, i have been thinking more and more about using that spare 10 gallon i talked about in my last post about cories. I know its not big, but it will hold a small school. i just have to pop the question to my dad to see if i can keep it. It is already set up and cycled. There are only 2 fish in it which are silver tipped tetras. They wont pose any problem to the cories though. As for plants, it has an Anubias congensis and an Anubias moliwe. i have plenty of spare plants between my 29 and 30 gallon to put in it. I also have quite of few rocks to form caves for them.
Does anyone know of any good websites to get info about cory cats?

according to this description- http://www.corycats.com/corydoras_arcuatus_htm.htm , they get up to 50-55 mm which is 1.968503937 inches- 2.1653543307 inches. So, they would be fine as in size.

Corydoras metae common? I've only seen them once around here, whereas pretty much every store around here stocks Corydoras arcuatus nearly all the time!

Are they hardy and would they be fine for the 10 gallon?

Yes and yes.

I would love to be able to get my hands on more of the C. Arcuatus (sp? I know I can't spell)...Arched/Skunk corries...As I've only found one...

Also the C. metae breed quite easily, that or mine are just freaks

There is also one other cory that wasn't mentioned, the C. Melini...they resemble the metae as well, but the stripe down there back is more along the lines of the Arched, because of split, but it begins as one line near the dorsal fin...

Just thought I'd throw in my two cents againheidi

EDIT: Where in the US are you that your lfs has these corries for $2.99? If it is close enough it might be worth the drive even if it is to Austin or Louisiana

By the way I always find it fun to take my Corydora Aqualog with me if I think I might be running into unknown corries

C. metae is really easy to get in my state, and in several other areas up and down the East Coast. The store I worked at got shipments of these fish all the time. On the other hand, I've run across C. arcuatus just once. I guess your coast and mine are opposites in this respect.
