clowns actually prefer softer water ph 8 is quite high and though they may acclimatize to it i have found that they tend to flick and flash alot as though something is irratating there skin.IME

Here in Iowa it's about $3 for any size clown loach. They used to have 10-20g tanks filled with them but noone would buy them so they don't have loaches anymore.

OK. Well I ordered 4-3"+ Clowns on Mon. and picked them up on Tues. They only got 3 in so I grabbed 1 of their 2" Clowns and decided not to QT and put directly in 55(funny Perky I did just what you suggested before I read your post LOL). 55gal is at 4 angels, Royal plec, L-264 plec, 3 USD cats, and the 4 Clowns. Thx for the help.

You could quarantine but I never quarantine and have had no problems with any fish. Are the fish from your store usually safe? as in no disease and good quality? If you trust your LFS I wouldn`t see a problem with just adding 4-6 straight to your tank. It still up to you though, you could quarantine if you wanted. Just my opinion.

I reckon the Clowns would do good, you may wish to keep them in the 55g for a while, until they grow to a larger size of around 5 inches (which may take a while), if your worried the cichlids may try to eat the Clowns as they could be little.

So Perky, you think 4 clowns would be good for that tank? Well I could free my 20gal for QT(month or so),and also have a 55 I'm changin little bit and will have room for the clowns if any probs(be 4 angels, L264&Royal plecs,3 USD cats).Never kept that many "bottom" feeders in my tanks before(that would be 8 synos,2 plecs,4 clowns, and the ornate).Sorry u to Victom , think that could work. Love those loaches but have never kept a clown alive for more than 5 months. But only had 2 twice. 2nd 2 were QT'd for 1 month with 2 Yoyo loaches. Sold the Yoyo's for decent $$$ bout 3 months ago(had for a year)

That all sounds good, I love clown loaches but have had no luck with them in the past. BTW my tank does not have any clown loaches currently. Cichlids and synos in there. I know i'm way understocked, but do you guys think clowns would do well in there?

Yes, more clown would help out your existing clowns. THey would be more happy and not as timid as they may when theres only 1-2. GOod luck with your tank it sounds great.

I would say more Clown Loaches, 4 is a better number. My LFS has 3 6inch Clown Loaches in at the mo for £30 each!

I couldn't tell you about your african cichlids, but your choice of bottom feeders is great. Syno angelicuses rock.
