In the wild these catfish use mouthbrooding cichlids to hatch their eggs for them, but this isn't necessary under captive conditions. |

Calilasseia *Ultimate Fish Guru* Panda Funster Posts: 5496 Kudos: 2828 Votes: 731 Registered: 10-Feb-2003 | In the wild, Synodontis multipunctatus (if that's the catfish you have - there's more than one Cuckoo Catfish apparently) uses the Cichlids of the Genus Ophthalmotilapia as surrogate parents for its young (needless to say, the fishes concerned are all Lake Tanganyika natives). You could, theoretically, sacrifice a Cichlid brood to the catfishes and replicate the wild situation. Which in itself would be fascinating to observe. Alternatively, you could take Sirbooks' advice and try to spawn them without Cichlid hosts. |

They will more "likely" spawn with host cichlids available.This also requires stripping of female cichlids and a close watch because you have to strip within 5-8 days of holding.Cat eggs hatch quick. Might be easier to just let them get comfy and do it on there own.I've seen AHLI's (haps) do very well.Remember the cichlids will only be fooled so many times. |
