Thanks for all the information and first hand experience. Think I will get a small piece of driftwood for my tank. At least I know it won't be fatal if when the plecos arrive there isn't wood waiting for them.

Ok, I have taken some pictures. My camera isn't the greatest, and the babies won't hold still and pose. But they are so cute, moving around the tank already. I expected them to hide for a day or two.

I will try to post pictures of at least one of them. They all arrived healthy and happy.

Jamie, I purchased mine from a person named Sonic of Aquabid. Is that where, who you got yours from?

I have six coming today. They were about 3/4 to 1 inch when I won the auction at aquabid. This was just before Christmas. The breeder and I mutually agreed to wait until after Christmas to ship them to avoid any unintentional delays due to Christmas packages. I am assuming they are larger now. Should arrive sometime today, I am really getting excited waiting. First time I have ever ordered fish that were shipped. When they grow out some more, a friend will get one for her guppy tank.

I purchased a piece of driftwood tonight. I will treat it like I have seen suggested in other threads and have it waiting for the plecos when they arrive.

Ok, here goes another question about bristlenoses. At my local lfs today, they had bristlenose plecos, but I was told that the tank needed driftwood in it, because the plecos needed wood for their digestion and survival. Any advice? Do I need wood in the tank for their well-being? Any sites where I can get more information on keeping them? Their profile doesn't mention wood.

I have two BNs that don't have wood and are definitely doing well and growing I feed them fresh or frozen veggies as a treat, they're especially fond of broccoli.

I have 1 BN & he's always attached to the Bog wood that i have in the Tank.

I think that he needs it to digest better, but i'm not sure.

Every single one of my bristle noses love it. I know it is not totally necessary but they are really happy with it. They smile at me every time I walk by the tank...But seriously...if you can get some, you might as well especially if you don't want to bother dealing with the veggies.

You can substitute fibrous veggies for driftwood, as that is the only benefit it provides.

If you don't like the look of the wood you could get a tiny piece and conceal it behind rocks.

That way at night when bn are most active your little guy and give it a go. But it wouldn't make your water too brown or interfere with your decor.

I had a bn and when I learned that they would benefit from driftwood I put some in and it went mad doing the hula all over it. Seems to pay less attention these days but I suspect it is because it is more active when the lights are out.

All the best with your little bn. They are great aren't they?

There are actually plecs that get nutrients from wood, and it does help with their digestion. Many Panaques love wood, and the bristlenose catfish does, as well. They do seem to benefit from it, but I keep a BN without wood, and he is a happy little critter.

Thanks, that puts my mind at rest. I couldn't imagine a fish needing to eat wood for its digestion.
