don't think they NEED it - theres another thread somewhere a number of days back that covered this topic extensively. bottom line seems to be, their mouths are made for scraping algae and other plant matter, not rasping wood.

i'm sure it wouldn't mind, though. i think it's more important to give it some sort of structure to hide in/ under during the daytime - the structure itself is more important than what it's made of.

Ummm...I don't think they absolutely *need* wood, because I had one that absolutely thrived (a little too much ) without it. IMO not necessary, but I don't think he'd mind very much either. HTH
