I'd be cautious and say no. They will tolerate lower temps of aound 22 degrees C but not for prolonged periods. I'm not entirely sure of the climate conditions in California but I'd stick to a controlled environment.

Would they only be in the pond during the summer? Would you be taking it in when it get colder? Where in california are you?

I really wouldn't risk it. I'd only trust places in southern florida/southern texas to hold tropical fish in ponds.

Sorry to be 'non thread related' but is keeping tropicals outdoors considered 'a norm' in the US? Sorry for my ignorance but.....

Tropical fish are only kept outdoors safely in florida and south texas. Some people do put them outdoors in tubs were the water gets warmer.
