you know I wonder if we could start petitions in our respective countries, states, counties wherever nessisary to stop the tourcher of these poor animals. I have less qualms with genetically altered colour then I do with tatoo because they are now bread that way. I don't really want to start a debate on the pro's and con's of genetically altered stuff. So I am probably going to be sorry for bringing it up. However, I don't think genetically altering things just to make them more colourfull or whatever is ok, but utilitarianly altering fish to protect our waters is ok imho. (i.e. zebra danio that are red)funny that the non altered ones are on the FP banner.

I hate it when people say that saltwater fish are prettier than freshwater fish. I find it to be the exact opposite.

But that's probably because I much prefer shiny and iridescent colors (which is what freshwater fish generally have) over mere pigments (which is what most marine fish have).

Actually, People dye dogs hair on a regular basis... but thats a whole seperate conversation there. But i think the idea is that people want "marine colour" at "freshwater" prices.

What i want to know is why people even take the time to dye a fish? aren't they just as beautiful in their natural state as they are with brightly colored dye? I HATE this more than anything, its not like there arent a million different kinds of fish out there, with their own beautiful color combinations, but then people have to go and dye them certain colors that they want? i mean.. to me.. thats just cruel.. i mean, if your dog doesnt turn out how you want it to look, do you take it to a plastic surgeon, do you dye its hair shades of blue?? i mean COME ON!

sorry.. i was on a rant...

That's not dye; it's their natural coloration.

Suddenly even "natural" became relative but I get what you mean. The concept of Glowfish and whether that´s a good thing or not (altering genes within living organisms) have been and will be discussed over and over so consider this a parentheses in this tread.

"Anyway, I had to go look at the fish, even though I VERY RARELY buy fish from this store because it is kind of dirty.
I saw what they called Glow Spotted Danios. They were VERY bright and VERY dyed too."

Are you sure they weren't glofish--you know, those bright red zebra danios infused with genes of some cnidarian (I forget which) that allows them to glow? That's not dye; it's their natural coloration.

dyed green ones, and start selling them as "Christmas Corys".

that makes me too too too sad. I could just weep. fish are not bread dough that can be dyed for a quick buck when it is football grand final or St Pat's Day.

We know there is such a thing as dyed fish. People on the street that wander into an LFS have no idea. Shops should label their stock.

About one of the early posts--some ablinos do have pigments--albino is usually a lack of brown and black pigments.

Dyeing fish is always a scumbags pastime but the irony of dyeing a fish specifically inbred for albinism (ie: to actually blanche the colour out of it)seems particularly ridiculous.

Give them a needle and throw them naked into a pool full of about 200 hungry adult bullshark and tell them theyre not coming out until theyve tattooed every last one.

I went to an LFS yesterday, to give my dog a bath.

Anyway, I had to go look at the fish, even though I VERY RARELY buy fish from this store because it is kind of dirty.
I saw what they called Glow Spotted Danios. They were VERY bright and VERY dyed too. I was very upset. They jsut keep dying more and more fish. I wish they would stop doing it. Why can't theu just buy little neon sweaters to put on them instead?! That would work so much better! The little fishies would not have to be hurt and on the plus side it would keep them warm!

Okay, I am through with the jokes, but it does really tick me off that they have to do that. They shoudl have to put a warning label on those fish; kind of like a surgeon general warning. If sould state that the fish are dyed and what they went through to dye them.

Check this out mrwizerd, and others of course. This is one of the campains presently going on. Maybe you, and other FPers can help spreading it?

Heidi and I are arguing over some albino cories we saw at a lfs. Owner, of course, swears they are natural, I think they are dyed, and Heidi isn't sure. They look like normal albino cories with a pink spot on the base of their tails, just before the fin starts. To me the pink is too bright to be normal, they are advertised as albino pink spot cories. If they were true albinos there wouldn't be any color at all on them. Sorry I don't have pictures, but just in case someone may know of a cory species with a pink spot that is natural please let us know.

I so wish that no one would buy dyed fishies because that way they would not dye them

That's where people like us come in esandbergger, we can slowly educate people, alot have no idea whatsoever that these poor creatures weren't born looking that way

I am even reluctant to purchase other fish or supplies from lfs that sell dyed fish. Even saw some goldfish or koi with colored spots on their bodies. ]:|]:|
