I was wondering if it is safe to not feed octinuleses...I have one otto and my tank is infested with diatoms, until I get rid of the diatoms can my fish do without food? I mean, I feed the other fish in my tank(I have one guppy), and when I say infested with diatoms, I mean about a zillion diatoms. What do you think?

FishyHelper,Diatoms are like algae, only they can only be killed by adding to the amount of light. Also, I cant feed my otto because, well, let's just say that Im low on cash.

Hi Wfish and welcome to FP

I've found that if there is plenty of algae in the tank, there is no need to supplement the diet of ottos. Some folks here like to supplement with algae wafers and/or vegetables such as zuccini, but I always found my ottos preferred to eat the algae even when there were alternatives available.

Keep an eye on your ottos and make sure there really is enough algae for them to eat, and that they are eating it. There were certain types that mine wouldn't touch, but most of it they munched on pretty happily.

Also, take a look through some of the other threads here about ottos. They can often be quite delicate, but it seems pretty much luck of the draw. And whatever you do, enjoy them.
