![]() | Flying Fox vs. Pleco is 10 gal. |
kowar100![]() Fingerling Posts: 47 Kudos: 45 Votes: 0 Registered: 03-Sep-2005 ![]() ![]() | Hello! I have a 10 gallon tank. I would like to get an algae-eating fish to the tank, but I'm not sure which would be best. I heard that Flying Foxes do not get nearly as large as most common Plecos, so I thought this might be a better choice for my tank. But is the Flying Fox as effective at cleaning? |

They also dont actually eat algae, if thats what you want it for. They eat microscopic life forms, insects, and meatier foods. Also, a flying fox grows to 6 inches, or about the same size as a red tail black shark. It is too large for a 10g tank. You would be much better off to choose an algae eater suited to that tank size, such as a Bristlenose pleco, or a rubbernose pleco, or a couple of ottos. However, the SAE gets at least 6 inches long and is an active schooler. They are much too big for a 10 gallon. A common pleco gets well over a foot long, so that wouldn't work either. I would suggest a group of otos. They are small. You could also get snails or shrimp to help. As a side note, those tiger barbs will get about 3 inches long and like to be in groups larger than the one you have. They would definitely appreciate a larger tank as well. I would fear for the safety of anything else you might add to the tank, as the barbs can get aggressive in small groups. They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver, So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces. |

Otto's eat Algae & are much more smaller. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |
