I recently seen a BGK that was about 7 years old and it was about 40cms (16 inches) in length so what size they end up in home aquaria can be considerably smaller than what they reach in the wild. The 55gal tank will be fine for the BGK for a year or so but certainly not much longer. If you have plans to get a bigger tank at a later date then it'll be fine.
My BGKs all love the longer reed type plants that they swim through, any plants are fine really, just plenty of them to make them feel safer which means you'll see alot more of them

As Shinigami has said, tankmates should be non territorial and non agressive and definately not too small unless you don't mind losing the odd one here and there

Where'd you get that length? I haven't found stuff that says the BGK gets much more than 20"... Though it can't be housed permanently in a 55 gallon, it's still a pretty big fish.

But you can pretty much keep this with any fish that isn't small and won't act aggressively towards the BGK.

And I have never heard of any fish requiring specific types of plants, so I don't know what that question is about. It can be kept with any plant.

Your tank isn't big enough for it, let alone other fish. They grow to 1 metre (almost 40" in the wild and although it won't reach this in aquaria, it will still grow considerably large enough to warrant a much bigger tank. As other tankmates should be large and robust too - there wouldn't be anything else to go into the tank.
